4 Year Liberal Arts Colleges Struggling

My wife's sister works in administration at Wisconsin Lutheran College and she stated, about 3 years back, that colleges were needing to get ready for the student enrollment drop off that is about to hit.

Near where I live, in the past 3 years, 2 colleges have closed. Decisions that were made quickly: Silver Lake College and Cardinal Strict College. St. Norbert College recently cut faculty and programs. Some in the college were up in arms over this.

Add to the lower birthrate.... you have less males attending college. in 2023 they make up 42%, in 2011 they made up 47%. I don't know if this is only white males... or just males.

Any colleges near you foundering?
Woah, Cardinal Stritch closed?? I literally drove through the campus yesterday, was wondering what the huge construction project was all about.

Learning shit is for pussies!

300,k in debt for a degree worth Jack shit ... great deal!!

My kids know if they want to go to college they are going to need a scholarship. And we are white so they are gonna have to EARN the shit out of that motherfucker.

I got a scholarship. It can be done.

As far as college it only makes sense now if you pursue a degree that will pay insane money to outweigh the debt. Finance, law, medicine....

Most young men should consider trade school.
You can make fucking bank as a plumber, contractor or electrician and those jobs aren't going to be replaced by AI

LOL, I didn't even catch that... bloody autocorrect.
That shit happens to me all the time. Sometimes I see it quick for the ninja edit, sometimes not so much

The thing that drives me nuts, is when it takes a perfectly legitimate word that you have typed and spelled correctly and then decides that no, you must have meant this other word instead and swaps it... Fuck you phone, just fuck you!!!

...and no-one ever and I mean, goddamn EVER means "duck you".

That drives me out of my motherducking mind.

They call it a smart phone but it can't figure out that I curse like a sailor and never intentionally discuss water fowl.

My keyboard is pretty trained on swearing. If I swipe for ducking it actually changes it to fucking when I hit the space key.

I went to a private liberal arts school (Columbia College) for my last two years when getting my journalism degree. I got off lucky as I didn't live on campus and finished with $37k in debt after 5 semesters. Id hate to look and see what tuition is now.

I don't regret going because it opened a lot of doors for me but if I could have done it differently I would have. I would have gone to a public university and got a degree in something else like human/computer interaction or design thinking... Although I'm not sure those were even a thing back in 06-09.

First thing I do on a new phone is turn off autocorrect and predictive text in the settings.

Back on topic, state universities with extensive STEM programs seem to be doing ok.

The growth of college enrollment just wasn't sustainable, both in size and cost. In a few decades, it went from the top students who would go into lucrative, specialized fields and made more money, to thinking it was the piece of paper and not the specialized fields they were going into that made more money, so they started lowering the standards, handing out student loans and adding junk degrees to cram as many people as possible into colleges. Then pretty crappy jobs that never required a degree before started requiring a degree, so the same number of people in the specialized fields still make good money, but there's a whole lot of people added who don't make any more money but now have massive loans to pay off.

Needless to say, the payoff for a degree wasn't even close to keeping up with the rising cost to get one, and we got more statistics over time of how many people drop out, work outside of their field of study, or end up in a job that didn't require a degree at all, so more people in the last several years don't think it's worth

For me personally, I went to college on scholarship and wouldn't have gone if I had to take out a loan, and haven't used my degree once.

I always wanted to go to college and have the college experience, but the fees were too much for someone from a working class background like me, even in a heavily subsided country like Ireland (3k for year)

At the same time, the value and time investment in needed to succeed at a college isn't really worth it for most for people, other than to pursue a career in academia.
Why spend 4 years doing an English Literature when you could've spent that same time reading what interests and honing your skills in creative writing and self pubbing (like I did) while also earning lots of money from learning a trade?

A degree in Classics might all but lead you to a teaching job in a secondary school/high school, and that's pretty much it. Perhaps in the future, when I don't have to worry about money or the stigma of living with parents, I might go back someday and have the college experience (and meet lots of cute college aged girls :))
Fair play to ye lad. Theres more you can learn in college. I did economics for instance, good money to be made there

I think academic inflation will be a real problem in future
