Economy 4.5 trillion tax cut extension is the final nail in the coffin of America

So we apparently want to reduce the debt but are adding more than 20 trillion over the next years?

Is this what you wanted? To pay more in tax but actually receiving less because they are gutting all your benefits so they get richer?
The mental gymnastics the supposed debt hawks in here will be going through in this thread will be entertaining. It was never about the debt, though. This whole DOGE charade was always about selling huge tax cuts to the rich while gutting our social safety nets. It's disgusting, but MAGA is just that.

How do you build up manufacturing without spending? The debt seems intractable. Even if this is to set up something better in the future your still making a tradeoff that probably wasnt worth it. It seems like an almost impossible problem that either cant be addressed because of some structural inexorability, or wont because its a talking point to gain support.

Aren't they cutting medicaid and food stamps to pay for the tax cuts for the top 1%?
They are Republicans after all.

By "cutting" we mean essentially eliminating.

And let's not make a mistake. This will absolutely kill Ameeican citizens. A majority of disabled people are on medicaid. They're f*cked. 2/3 of people in nursing homes are on medicaid. They're f*cked.

There was once a term used by corporatists who courted the Burgoisie to rule in Government...it was "unproductive eaters"...also "useless eaters." Lebensunwertes Leben, "life unworthy of life."

This is that philosophy institutionalized. If you cannot work, get f*cked and die. And if you can work and you're not in the top 5% of wealthy people, then you are taxed so they can enjoy tax cuts and subsidies.

To be fair, my understanding is they haven't explicitly said they'll cut 880 billion from Medicaid or 230 billion from SNAP, but they did reject any amendments that would prevent such cuts. There also isn't really another line item they could take it from given the departments they've charged with making the cuts. They also plan to expand military spending.

$880 billion is pretty much the entire budget. And with food deserts more common than ever, this is going to starve poor people in rural areas.

Of course they're going to increase Military spending. They want to ramp up imperialism

There's no way to get 2 trillion in cuts without cutting from Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, or the military.

That's 80% of our budget alone, even if you cut the entire 20% remaining it's not even close to the $2T target.

880 Billion has to come from line items under the jurisdiction of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, and 230 billion has to come from items under the jurisdiction of the House Committee on Agriculture.
So there really aren't other big ticket items to target besides Medicaid and SNAP.

Also, eliminating SNAP will have a dramatic effect up the economy. Businesses everywhere rely deeply on SNAP money being spent in their stores

Look on the bright side, the thing they loathe the most is Communism (communism meaning literally any notion of wealth-redistribution). Nothing creates communists as fast as institutionalized War on the working class and poor.

Here's a breakdown for those interested, it gives a percentage breakdown at the end

Extension of TCJA Individual Tax Cuts: This is the biggest chunk, renewing lower income tax rates, a higher standard deduction, and an enhanced Child Tax Credit (CTC) set to expire December 31, 2025. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) pegs this at $3.5 trillion over 10 years, or about 78% of the $4.5 trillion total. It includes keeping rates like the top 37% (vs. reverting to 39.6%) and the standard deduction at $29,200 for married couples (vs. dropping to ~$16,525).

New Individual Tax Breaks: Trump campaigned on eliminating taxes on tips, overtime pay, and Social Security benefits. Estimates vary, but these could cost $500 billion to $1 trillion over 10 years. Splitting the difference at $750 billion, that’s roughly 17% of the plan. Exempting tips and overtime targets service workers and laborers, while Social Security relief aids seniors.

Corporate Tax Reduction: Trump wants to lower the corporate rate from 21% to 15% for U.S.-made goods producers. This isn’t expiring under TCJA (it’s permanent), but the new cut is estimated at $200 billion to $400 billion over 10 years. Taking $300 billion as a midpoint, it’s about 7% of the total. It’s a smaller slice but heavily favors domestic manufacturers.

Other Provisions: This includes extending pass-through business deductions (e.g., the 20% deduction for S-corps) and potentially raising the State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction cap above $10,000. These are less quantified but might be folded into the above or add a small fraction—let’s conservatively estimate -2% (effectively rounding adjustments).

So, the percentage breakdown by type:
TCJA Individual Tax Cuts: 78%
New Individual Tax Breaks (tips, overtime, Social Security): 17%
Corporate Tax Cut: 7%
Other/Margin of Error: -2% (adjusts for rounding to 100%)

The biggest problem I have is there are no military cuts in this plan. In fact military spending is slated to increase. Staggering.
