More than half of China extends shutdown over virus

The majority of China's growth hubs have delayed the resumption of business by at least a week as the country tries to control the spread of a new coronavirus that has killed more than 200 people.

As of Saturday afternoon, at least 21 provinces, municipalities and other regions in China have told businesses not to resume work before Feb. 10 at the earliest. That's according to publicly available statements from the governments.

This is just the beginning. Air traffic is going to plummet. Throw Brexit into the mix, and a 2008 global recession is in the works.

Edit. Holy crap man this is crazy.

Things are looking as good as they ever have, but it's always better to go under with expectations. And if things work out, breathless patience with bitchy centrists will be the name of the game.

Why do you think the coronavirus will do any such thing?

Are you guys really tracking this thing?

The R-nought for this thing is being reported as a 4.

That means 4 more infected for every person that gets it.

This thing is going to continue to spread like wild fire.

Edit. Holy crap man this is crazy.

Oh yeah man, the more I see about this, the more I am convinced this is the biggest story of our lifetimes thus far. This is going to make 9-11 seem like a blip on the radar.

I'm trying to get used to the idea that a year from now we will probably be hearing about 100's of thousands, and even millions of dead.

I could be wrong. Maybe this is all hype and misinformation, but I don't think so.

<{Heymansnicker}> Even Maher thinks Warren is batsh*t crazy....LMAO!

Bill Maher rips Warren using 'young trans person' to vet Education Secretary pick: 'Is this not crazy stuff?'
Comedian Bill Maher seemed baffled by Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., on Friday, suggesting that she was "crazy" in the way she wanted to vet her Secretary of Education.

His comments came after Warren pledged to allow an unidentified "young trans person" to veto her pick for leading the Education Department.

"Now, [former President Barack] Obama said people just don't want crazy stuff," Maher said during Friday's "Real Time with Bill Maher."

"Is this not crazy stuff?" he said, while also jokingly asking if Warren was running to serve as "President of Berkeley."

Bernie is running away with it.

I was saying Sanders wins by 10%. I'm revising that. He is going to win Iowa by 20%.

I know you use hyperbole a lot but are you saying he will really get 20% more than the 2nd place candiate in Iowa or am I misreading this?

Bernie Sanders, the Democratic Front-Runner

Bernie Sanders, at seventy-eight, three months clear of a heart attack, has outlived obscurity to become the co-front-runner for the Democratic nomination for the Presidency of the United States. He is still thin and intent; to my eye, the hunch in his back has deepened. On a tour of Iowa last weekend, he wore a suit with an open-necked shirt, and his hair was on the tame side of its range. There are not many jokes in Sanders’s speeches right now, or stories, or people. He addressed thousands of people in Iowa and did not take a single question.

The better Sanders’s polls look, the more grave, even dour, he seems to grow. “Our infrastructure, our roads, our bridges, our border systems, wastewater plants are crumbling,” he said, morosely, in Ames. His ballooning prospects were enough to excite his crowds; Sanders himself could deflate into a more familiar tone. Americans have to endure the “international embarrassment” of failing to guarantee health care. Did you want to “talk about vulgarity?” Consider the pharmaceutical executives, “a bunch of crooks.” Dispassionately, he went on to climate change. “They have underestimated the kinds of forest fires and wildfires that we will be seeing. All of you are aware that Australia, a beautiful country, is now burning.” The average American worker “is not making a nickel more” than he or she did fifty years ago, he said, and “you got three people on top owning more wealth than the bottom half of American society. You got that? Three people, a hundred and sixty million people.” Why, you wondered, would a person invest himself in such a sick place? The answer, carried by his young crowds and surrogates: for the kids.

Bernie is a prophetic figure.

I would say more optimistic than hyperbole.

What I know is that Bernie is showing about a 4-6 point lead in Iowa, and has a history of over performing in caucus states by 4-10 points.

I don't think a 20 point win is out of the question.

Man. Lol.

I forgot that they had Castro standing on boxes so he could see over the podium

How can biden get away with this? The media is in “protect Biden at all costs” mode right now.

Gets irate at a town hall and tells America voter he see why his wife left him. Ouch.

I don't know about this man. I think it'll be a lot like H5N1 (birdflu) or the H1N1 (swineflu). Or even ebola. These things have a way of getting blown up by the media and carried by fear and hyperbole, not saying that it isn't terrible what is happening. Hopefully it'll be the case that it will be less severe than what they fear, as before, and that they can contain it.

Look at what the R naught is my man. The R naught is the number that shows how many each person infected is in turn infecting.

The R naught for Coronavirus is 4.

If SARS had a R naught of 4, it would have been a literal horror movie. SARS had a 11% fatality rate. This has a 3% fatality rate. SARS didn't spread from person to person. It's R naught was zero.

Experts Warn of Possible Sustained Global Spread of New Coronavirus

If the virus cannot be contained, it could start regularly circulating in the population like other common respiratory viruses

Some infectious disease experts are warning that it may no longer be feasible to contain the new coronavirus circulating in China. Failure to stop it there could see the virus spread in a sustained way around the world and even perhaps join the ranks of respiratory viruses that regularly infect people.

“The more we learn about it, the greater the possibility is that transmission will not be able to be controlled with public health measures,” said Dr. Allison McGeer, a Toronto-based infectious disease specialist who contracted SARS in 2003 and who helped Saudi Arabia control several hospital-based outbreaks of MERS.

Thanks. It's very early so it's impossible to know exactly how dangerous it is yet. I'm reading that, without containment measures, the R ratio is between 1.4-3.8 according to the source (1). Study from last week had it at 2.0-3.1 (2) but some Chinese officials say it might be as high as 5 (3). Fatality rate was just below 3%, WHO put it at 2% a few days ago (4). As usual, it's the elderly and infirm that are at the highest risk.

Either way, this is not good. 14.591 confirmed cases and 305 confirmed deaths as of this moment, according to the international tracker (worth checking out) (5). It's spreading really, really fast. Hopefully they can contain it somewhat.

Yeah I think we need to be careful about this rhetoric mate. No need to deify the man, although I know that you're coming from a good place. It's just a tad too similar to Trump being "chosen by god" and all.

Anyways, we're getting real close to Iowa now! Very exciting to see what's going to happen.
