@Anung Un Rama

This is a fascinating first-person account from the aforementioned architect of the Nazi economy. I take his word with slightly more than a grain of salt because of 1) the tangible distance he put between himself and the regime prior to the war, and 2) because he was actually cleared during the Nuremberg trials. I guess it's worth mentioning he was arrested in 1944 for his part in the Assassination Plot.

Dude probably possessed more power and influence in the country than anyone aside from Hitler himself for a period given he was both President of the Reichsbank and Minister of Economics with an incredible amount of power to wield within German finance, commerce and industry. This all despite never officially joining the party.

Me thinks Hitler really fucked up when he took the reigns of economic policy from the hands of Hjalmar Schacht and gave them to Hermann Göring on the basis of ideology and agenda over skill and qualifications. It's akin to removing Albert Einstein from the head of your physics institute and giving leadership duties to a random undergrad.

A slight chance history could've gone a different direction.

There was a special problem connected with my visit to London in December 1938; it was my last visit abroad in an official capacity. It had been preceded by the disgraceful destruction of the Jewish synagogues on 9 November 1938, and the fine imposed on the Jews of one billion Reichsmarks.

I had made no attempt to conceal from Hitler my opinion of this latest barbarism staged by Goebbels, and had told him frankly that this kind of thing could not go on. "If you won't formulate some legal basis for the Jews in Germany by which they can live their lives in decent conditions, you must at least allow them facilities for emigration."

Hitler himself seemed ill at ease in face of the world-wide repercussions aroused by the bestiality of November 9. He gave me an enquiring look. "Have you any suggestions?"

I unfolded my plan: "The whole of the property of Jews in Germany shall be brought into a trust company who will administer it according to law. This trust company shall be governed by an international committee, on which the Jews are also represented. On the basis of this property held in trust by way of security the committee will issue a loan in the international market amounting to, say, one to one-and-a-half billion Reichsmarks.

This loan carries an interest of about five percent and is repayable by annual installments over a period of twenty to twenty-five years. The German Government guarantees the transfer of interests and repayment installments in dollars so that the loan can be issued as a dollar loan. Jews all over the world will be urged to subscribe."

"And what is to be done with the dollars?"

"Out of the dollar proceeds of this loan every Jew wishing to emigrate will receive a certain sum which will facilitate his reception in another country and serve as a foundation on which to build a new life."

I was well aware that this was not an ideal proposition. But I feared that any chance of economic existence for the Jews would be completely destroyed by the party unless something was done to prevent it. My suggestion would mean that Jewish property in Germany would be preserved intact over a period of years. In the meantime, many new developments could occur.

To my great astonishment Hitler declared he had no objection to my attempt to put this idea into practice. At my suggestion he authorized me to convene a political discussion in London. The negotiations took place there from December 14 to 17, 1938. I contacted Lord Bearsted of the firm of Samuel & Samuel, who reacted sympathetically to the proposal, while other firms, as he informed me, turned it down.

There followed a discussion with Mr. Rublee, the American and British chairman of the so-called Evian Committee, and Lord Winterton, the British Minister, both of whom as well as Lord Bearsted were interested in following up my plan and in getting to work on those lines.

But this attempt to relieve the international situation failed also when I was dismissed from my office of President of the Reichsbank by Hitler on 20 January, 1939. My official connection with London was broken.
I haven’t read this yet, sherbro, but I will had reply appropriately. Just trolling while I get ready to get out of the house.

It’s a good read @MVelsor do you have any book suggestions?

Can I just clarify something about that shit?

Context:

Schacht was an extremely relevant guy at the pre-war economic controls of the most infamous regime in modern history. Sure, decidedly less evil than pretty much any party member but hardly a "kind hearted guy". Nobody is suggesting any such thing, he was a banker FFS. Bernie brought up 1930s Germany in a clip and it started a short conversation with you.

There was far more to the Nazis seizing power and securing support of the populace than rabid nationalism and "the blame game". That's how we got there. It is what it is, but as said - and proven - makes for a bit of a triggering subtopic. Hell, I'm (indirectly) dehumanized in one way or another on a virtual daily basis here and keep coming back. This is the War Room, sweeties.

it's crazy he has bad asthma. And I'm upset he didn't finish his last album last year, the single was cool

I hadn't seen or heard that, thanks. He's the fucking GOAT, those blades are still incredibly sharp though sadly seems he's starting to lose a bit of charisma. I stopped paying attention to hip-hop a long time ago and even then it was overwhelmingly kind of retroactively '90s based, so I guess you could say I've never been a fan of the contemporary genre.

Best Concept Track Ever

... Or is it this?

Joe Rogan says Biden and Warren both asked to appear on the Rogan podcast but Rogan turned them down. Says he is only interested in hosting Sanders and Gabbard.

I quite enjoy his verse as Masta Ace's multiple sclerosis.

Could you imagine Biden doing a 3hr interview while trying to follow Rogan's train of thought? If Rogan truly were a comedian he'd make it happen.

Oh yeah... sounds like a great guy: let’s seize property from Jewish people and put it into a trust and then encourage them to get out of Germany with the interest payments.

Really kind hearted plan there

I think it was more of a case of, "okay, how do I present a solution to a raving mad-man who has backed himself into a corner, that doesn't obviously end in blood?".

Him saying that they should just let the Jews be, probably wasn't an option. Hitler had people murdered for much lesser ideological disagreements.

@MVelsor and @jrams bringing some fire to the thread, thanks dudes. A few contributions:

Vinnie Paz is one of my favourite MCs. I remember when Ritual of Battle came out, one of my old friends was doing time and I brought the album with me on a visit.

Onyx isn't talked about as much, used to play a lot of bball to these guys:

A little big pun up in here, love this track:

And a classic. I remember listening to 36 chambers at 16 years old at boarding school, after my roommate brought it. My first introduction to hip hop:

Thank you. The insight is historically invaluable given how few people around Hitler (nevermind that significant or close to him) lived past the war or trials to tell any side of the story. It's kind of crazy to me how little he's ever mentioned.

Hjalmar Greeley Schacht (22 January 1877 – 3 June 1970) was a German economist, banker, centre-right politician, and co-founder in 1918 of the German Democratic Party. He served as the Currency Commissioner and President of the Reichsbank under the Weimar Republic. He was a fierce critic of his country's post-World War I reparation obligations. He served in Adolf Hitler's government as President of the National Bank (Reichsbank) 1933–1939 and became Minister of Economics (August 1934 – November 1937).

While Schacht was for a time feted for his role in the German "economic miracle", he opposed Hitler's policy of German re-armament insofar as it violated the Treaty of Versailles and (in his view) disrupted the German economy. His views in this regard led Schacht to clash with Hitler and most notably with Hermann Göring. He was dismissed as President of the Reichsbank in January 1939. He remained as a minister without portfolio, and received the same salary, until he was fully dismissed from the government in January 1943.[2]

In 1944 Schacht was arrested by the Gestapo after the assassination attempt on Hitler on 20 July 1944, because he allegedly had had contact with the assassins. Subsequently, he was interned until the end of the Third Reich in the concentration camps Ravensbrück and later at Flossenbürg. In the last days of the war, he was one of the 134 special and clan prisoners[a] who were transported by the SS from Dachau into the "Alpine Fortress" to Niederdorf in South Tyrol, where they were freed on 30 April 1945.[4]

Despite this, he was tried at Nuremberg, but was fully acquitted.

Lol Jesus Christ. I can't imagine what Rogan is thinking with the top 3 candidates wanting to be on his podcast.

But Warren isn't corrupted by big donors. How is that not sticking to your guys' ribs? I'm sometimes perplexed by the lack of willingness to accept such obvious things.
{<huh}

Did you pay attention to a word I wrote? I already wrote that Pete pwn3d Warren because she's a self-serving hypocrite on the issue. What part of that did you misconstrue? Money in politics is corrupting, doesn't matter if it's Pete or Warren or whoever. Even if their head or heart is in the right place, the big money comprises them. We need systemic reform to correct this.

"Maybe if I present my opinion as fact, no one will notice."
I'm NOT a Warren supporter and I said from the beginning that Pete pwn3d Warren because she's a self-serving hypocrite on the issue. I'm starting to suspect you guys are disingenuously misstating my position on purpose.

You can't leave out the other, more important half of what I said and say that I'm disingenuously misstating your position. That's disingenuously misstating my position.

Governorship of Indiana would be a perfect start. Stay out of DC; focus on a business friendly yet pro blue collar economic plan in-state; don’t go over the top on social justice issues... I think this is the best way to go. Obama’s understated strength with white, moderate, blue collar people in the Midwest and rust belts was a big deal and also translates favorably across the country.
I think Pete would be a good governor. Hopefully he raised his profile enough to pull it off and the Democratic disadvantage in a red/red-leaning state plus potential homophobia doesn't do him in.

PS - Good to see you posting here again. I remember you from way, way back...

If you're referring to Warren and her supporters hypocritically attacking Pete and his supporters on the issue, then I agree and I've already stated as much. If you're referring to something else, then spill it and I'll shoot you straight on it...
