2020-21 NBA Player Contracts

People always bring up Basketball whenever it comes to athletes pay and what not, but realistically it's just how Basketball is set up.

There is next to zero upkeep compared to pretty much all other Sports. What do you need to operate a Basketball game? Wooden floor that they just piece together, an inflatable ball and some sneakers. There is so little operational overhead that the league can afford to pay their athletes tens of millions of dollars.

The Sport also has the lowest amount of players compared to any other League, next to no minor league system and it's really an Individual Sport masquerading as a team Sport. When your Top 2 make upon 60-70% of your offense of course you're gonna pay them 30 million while your bench players make 1 million a piece.

Also another aspect of Basketball that is unique to the Sport is how it is basically two businesses in one: the Sport itself and Sneaker sales. This alone guarantees the NBA a huge amount of cashflow just from the fanboys buying new shoes every year.

Honestly the only other Sports that has such lucrative side business is the NFL with its gambling.
"Next to no minor league system" lol. So pretentious. You must have never heard of the G and D leagues. You should stop talking about shit you have no idea about

their ratings are back up in new season now they abandoned their blm agenda, they probably learned their lesson
or maybe the lower ratings were a reflection of how fragmented last seasons return was because of covid. You trumppers are hilariously dumb

This is insane, who in UFC other than Conor can make this much, the 120 ranked in salary is making 10 millions a year
they don't have to suffer cte to get it either, don't have to pay for their coaches, have personal coaches from the team, their boss have personal planes for their teams

they can eat train and sleep in their franchise facilities for free, their own medical facilities and doctors, trainers, coaches, it's insane how the treatment is so different, while both being popular sports in the world

UFC does it to itself by making its sport classless. Boxing in comparison has a history and is looked at as a battle of wits. If you present trashy, you will get trashy fans. You present yourself as respectable and you get families and advertising.

westbrook does not get bonus from averaging triple double every season lol
he just does it because he's retarded and think his stats is more important than team winning
which is why no team wants westbrook, and everybody has recognized he is team cancer, any basketball fan with an iq ackowledge that

wizards was 0-5 with westbrook on the court this year, last night westbrook sat out and wizards won their first game by a 30 points blowout, that should tell you something
I agree fully. Im a Wizards fan and when Russ plays or team is the worst in basketball

There are more players in the NFL than in the UFC and they have NBA salaries anyways.
Salaries are very different in the NBA and the NFL. NBA players make more money because there's only 12 roster slots (?). The NFL has 53 roster spots and not to mention a full practice squad that they pay too.

I lived in China half my life, while it's absolutely true basketball is the most popular sport in China
Nba does not make that much from it. For starter chinese government has completely stopped broadcasting nba games after the hong kong incident, the average basketball fan can only access illegal streaming online and nba does not get a cent from that

second, the average chinese income is low, they can't afford the nba merchants, shoes, t-shirts, jerseys. most buy the knock offs.

not to mention nba teams cannot make money from selling ticket to oversea chinese fans

Lebron supported China because he has his 1 billion dollars nike contract to protect, he was protecting his own brand, and since he is a global phenomenom, his shoes and clothing line sells a lot worldwide. Lebron's sneakers outsell more than entire teams in China.

China is not very lucritive of a sports markets if you really dissect it. it's less than 10 percent of nba's total revenue

*rubs eyes* am I still on Sherdog?

Great informative post.

NBA brings in a shit ton of money, from all different kinds of sources, They have a shit load more fans (more friendly for kids, families, older people)..
The NBA Players get a percentage of all the money brought in, and the CBA and union come up with the percentage. And teams and players (agents) come up with contracts.
Why shouldn't NBA players make the money that they do? where else should the money go?

the better question would be why does the ufc keep most of the revenue themselves, who is getting the bigger chunk of the pie, dana white himself?

The rookie league minimum is like 900k and goes up for each year in the league

Exactly! A lot better question. You shouldn't Question other sports or the validity of their contracts. It should be why isn't there a union in MMA or UFC, or why are the UFC contracts absolute trash? No signing bonus, Guaranteed money, matching clause is ridiculous, sponsorship pay is trash
