Prime Jake Shields would be UFC WW champ right now

Jake Shields has beaten Tyron Woodley.

Jake Shields has beaten Maia.

Jake Shields has beaten Robbie Lawler.

Those are the three best guys at WW in the UFC right now.

Prime Jake Shields would reign supreme over this Welterweight division.

Great wrestling and submission grappling. Iron chin. Great cardio. Every WW's worst nightmare

Shake bless

I agree woodley is the weakest ufc champ possibly ever not sure if he's even top 5 in bellator

My favourite Jake Shields fight was this one. 42 seconds of joy.

And this one. Probably the hardest punch Shields has landed in his career:

Ive been a fan of him since Strikeforce. Jake Shields never gets the credit he deserves because of the caveman mentality of the mma community.

When Maia moved to WW and was on a tear backpacking people all around, Jake beat him at his game even better than T-Wood.
Beat Hendo, who then went to beat Fedor and Rua. He even ate a couple of H-bombs.

Underrated all time great. War Shields!!!
Hendo threw his back out in that fight

Am I the only one who really enjoyed his fight with Maia?

I think Jake is one of the best WW/MWs to ever fight in MMA. But Hector beat him soundly. Martin Kampmann gave him a great fight and Jason Miller also gave him a hell of a fight outside the UFC. Jake was a tough fight for anyone, but it was primarily due to his prowess on the ground and being able to get it there. Any fighter that could nullify that had a pretty good chance of beating Jake.

He did bring up his striking over time, but it wasn't normally going to win him a lot of fights. Jake's fights contested primarily on the feet were pretty uneventful, such as the one with Woodley. I think Woodley has improved more than Jake at this point and it would be a tough fight for Jake if they were both at the peak of their careers.

He is a slightly better Maia which I do not think is enough to become a champ these days.

Shields had nothing at all for GSP....except eye pokes.

Also, Martin Kampmann got robbed.
Most blatant display of intentional eye poke attack that I've ever seen. There might have been worse in the history of MMA, but this was a title fight and Shields was a complete dirt bag. Lost a lot respect for him. Didn't hate him afterwards, but did not root for him any more.

He recently lost to Jon Fitch, so wouldn't Fitch be champ?

e: Read the rest of the thread. Prime Shields could be champ in a GSP-less division although there are guys I would pick over him, including the current versions of Maia and Woodley.

Calm down. Jake went 4-3 in the UFC. He was no world beater.

That said, WW is a strange weight class right now, both in UFC and even Bellator and WSOF (or whatever it's called now). There are a lot of style-vs-style match ups that could play out differently and leave a lot of questionable fighters as a champ.

That was because the intentional eyepokes had GSP blind.

Jake would be an all time great at WW if his best wins didn't happen at MW.

Yep. GSP-Sheilds was definitely heading to 50-45 until that eye poke. Jake should've lost point for that. I've seen lesser pokes get points deducted.

There are so many "MMA" fans who only value standup and don't consider grappling to be real fighting, these striking fanboys are the worst fans.

There should be a counter-movement of fans who only consider fighters who use takedowns to be real fighters, the strikers I actually like (eg. Rumble, Nunes, Bisping) would still be protected under this credo while pure striking specialists who the striking fanboys tend to prematurely hype as worldbeaters like Wonderboy, Holly and Conor would be discriminated against. :D

Honestly shields could be mw champ right now. Unlike bisping, shields was able to handle Dan Henderson while being truly outsized

Yet he still beat Woodley, Maia, Robbie, Condit, Okami and Hendo.

But only 2 of them at 170, right?

It doesn't make any sense to me why Shields suddenly became a WW when he left SF.
He was at his best at 185, IMO.
He should have challenged Anderson Silva instead of GSP, and fought at his comfortable weight.

GSP came into the Sheilds fight thinking his striking was on another level and wanted a finish. Instead his ugly overhand missed a tons of times and Shields boxed him up in rounds 4-5. Agreed about the Kampmann fight though!
