It is ridicolous that people think leg curls are inherently bad. Leg curls are often a big part of preemptive work or rehabilitate work for knee injuries.

I was given a program including curls to deal with a case of runner's knee just a couple of weeks ago.

That's not a leg curl. It's a leg extension. It's the opposite of a leg curl.

Leg extensions have very little functional applicability and increase sheer force on the patellofemoral joint. They are not necessarily bad unless the person has pre-existing patellofemoral pain symptoms.
