My ADD Training Log 2014

I want to see Midmo's unspoken of porn.

*slithers away*

What I've walked into upon opening doors at various trailer parks is enough to make grown men cry. The range and depth of perversion I've witnessed first hand makes things from the internet seem tame.

BJJ - 1 Hour

Didn't think I was going to make it today, but got off a conference call early so went to class. Got there about a half hour late, but got some rolling in. Still keeping with my current strategy - sweeps only from guard, look to sub only after gaining mount. Hopefully I can make it Thursday night - there will be a lot more upper belts training at that time.

BJJ - 1Hour

Attended Fernando's class this morning. Did some nice drilling on a basic open guard pass. It's just very nice to drill this stuff, I wish we did more of it. Small class, I rolled with a blue belt & two white belts. One of the white belts is brand new, so that was fun lol. I tried to get him to work on his posture. Both the other white belt & the blue belt are pretty technical. But I was able to work my open guard & get sweeps, then progress to mount & submit. That's all I'm doing right now, I have to improve my open guard & mount.

I'm also trying really hard to not go backwards. In other words, If your guard is open, I'm not letting you close it again. If I progress to half guard, then I'm not letting the guy go to any full guard from there. I think this is an important mental state for me to be in when rolling.

I really don't know how you manage to do all this stuff (BJJ, lifting, Highland Games, running) with a regular job and a family. I think you do quite a bit more than I do, and I have huge amounts of time as a result of being single and never having to do any domestic stuff.

Well it helps that I work from home unless I'm visiting a client, so my hours are pretty flexible. If I don't have a meeting I can leave in the middle of the day for an hour & get some training in. But my consistency with everything pretty much sucked in 2013. Lots of missed workouts, did 1 PL comp & only 1 Highland Games comp. There was a lot of personal stuff going on. But I think we're through that & so hopefully 2014 will be better. I'm starting to realize that consistency is probably more important than what program your on or anything else....

PM Workout

BJJ - 1.5 Hours

Man the evening classes are so much tougher with all the higher belts! But its good for me so I need to make it in the evening at least once a week. Anyway, my neck got jacked up tonight. It's been bothering me for a week, but tonight it got tweaked. So I iced it, gonna rest & ice all weekend. Might go to BJJ tomorrow but light - no sparring.

I like your idea of never giving up ground in bjj. The idea makes sense from a goal related idea. Its easy to become compliant on giving up a position change even as simple as giving full back after achieving half even when you know you can pass again.

I've never done that consciously. If I ever get back on the mat I may have to borrow it.

BJJ - 1.5 Hours

Good stuff today. Worked some very nice details on the kimura from half guard. Got some nice rolling in & then had a 20 minute round with another purple belt.

Yeah this is good. As an extension of it, I also think it's a good strategy to refuse to grant your opponent any stable position.

Like if he starts to pass your guard, never let him have a good, solid side control. Instead, force him to settle for an awkward, unstable side control that you can quickly escape from before he gets the 3 points. Or if he tries to close guard, wedge your knee and elbow in so he can't. Or if he sweeps you, pop right back up to your feet like nothing happened. Never let him establish position without a fight. Those 3 seconds he needs to establish before he gets the points, should feel like the longest 3 seconds of his life.

BJJ - 1 Hour

Tough class this morning! I got really tired - I think its because I drank too many martini's last night. Kinda sucked, but I guess that's my punishment. Did lots of drilling, then some tough specific training with open guard. I worked with a big wrestler - tough to do anything with these guys unless you can get them on their back.

BJJ - 2.5 hours

Did 1 hour of nogi this morning immediately followed by 1.5 hours of gi. This was the 1st time I've done nogi in 2-3 years, so..... lol. I got wrecked pretty much, but it was a good time. Beniel Dariush is the nogi instructor on MWF morning, its' a fast-paced class - pretty cool. We just drilled & then it was 5x5 minute sparring sessions with 1 minute in between, no real breaks, different partner each time.

In the gi class, we worked on side control & escapes from side control & I did specific training (from the bottom) against Ricardo, the 280+ lb black belt lol. Then sparring with a brown belt.

In other news, the guy that beat me in the open division in the tournament a month ago just got his brown belt :) I figured he was close. June might be my next BJJ tournament.

Also, Xande Ribeiro just got back in the US this week - not sure for how long. But he is in San Diego, my instructor is friends with him, so might make a trip to go train with Xande in the next couple of weeks if I can. That would be cool!

Beneil has his next UFC fight coming up on 4/11 against Ramsey Nijem:

What kind of martinis where they? This is a highly advanced training log we expect details and in order to give advice and support that kind of information is crucial

Good question - sorry for the lack of detail. These were martini's that I had at home, I used Skyy vodka, which, in my opinion, is probably the best "cheap" vodka. I also used a splash of dry vermouth, shaken in ice, with an olive. I had 3 fairly large martinis, which is at least 1 or 2 too many to function well the next day.

But it really helped my piano playing & singing that night, so.... pros & cons...

BJJ - 1.5 Hours

Just me, Tim (purple belt) and Ricardo (black belt) today. We got to ask some questions, and sort out some mistakes that both of us are making in basic positions. Then we did positional guard passing, each of us on the bottom for 6 minutes, then a few rounds of sparring. Tim & I are very evenly matched, so it was tough but good.

My consistency has been good & I'm improving a lot - but I'll be in Hawaii next week & I doubt I'll be training.

But better on the booze logging. I'm a Manhattan man more than Martini man.

BJJ - 2.5 Hours

Belt ceremony & seminar today. I got a stripe on my purple belt, so that was cool....moving right along. In the seminar, each black belt showed a specific technique & then we drilled. There were 8 black belts present, including 2 current UFC fighters, which was pretty cool.

I leave tomorrow morning for Hawaii, wife is going with me so probably won't train at all.

Here's a picture from the Belt Ceremony today. I'm back row, 4th from the left.
