Cancer patients have had to pay 10 - 30% of their income on out of pocket costs. Does anyone else find this outrageous? People with terrible illnesses should be focused on getting better. They shouldn't have financial anxiety looming over them. If you recall, Sanders' plan was/is to have zero out of pocket expenses.
Single payer HC can work, but like everything else, the devil is in the details.
Bernie, or other progressive dems need to come up with a specific plan, and hilight what in that plan, will make single payer work.
For example, if we go Medicare for all, then we need to push Medicare spending into the annual budget. Without this, we create a recipe for disaster in spiraling out of control costs.
If we put the government in charge of HC, we must ensure that the government and HC industry are systemically put at odds with each other. They need to check and balance each other.
By pushing the Medicare funding to the annual budget, you create incentive for the government to control costs, instead of creating incentive for crony capitalism.
Their are a lot of different examples for HC systems that function well. From a private system in Singapore, to German single payer, to public co-ops in the US. Hell, the Cuban HC system has lessons we could learn from.
Smart, subject matter experts, could solve the HC problem. It is lobbying and campaign finance that prevents this.
