So far the technology isn’t quite there when it comes to UvB and LeDs, all of the testing I’ve seen is all over the place. Some of them lost all uvb within days and others degraded writhing a few months. It it’s getting closer though, zoomeds product is significantly better and I’m still not sure if I would use it.

I know we've talked about UVB led's in the past, but this light is supposedly better than what has been offered before. The guy behind the VivTech lights was the manager for Zilla, I believe his name was Ryan.

Yeah, they are a cool product but the independent testing I’ve seen hasn’t really panned out yet.

The barreleye fish? They're creepy. IIRC the eyes are stationary (pointing upwards) and fully enclosed inside its head. The deep oceans are weird.

No clue. If I had to guess I'd say that it allows them to have their eyes being completely internal which protects them from damage or parasites or whatnot.

I live in the Appalachians and those fuckers are a nuisance. I see one almost every time I go to the river, gotta be extra cautious. Copperheads and Timber rattlers as well.

I love snakes, but not the venomous viper kind.

The green orbs are the eyes. They live right at the level where there isn't much sunlight and most fish wouldn't be able to see, but since they have so much of their eye exposed like that they can gather more light to see. They can look forward or up with them. They also steal food from siphonophores so that clear dome helps protect them.

They just caught one on video off the coast of California the other day.


Siphonophores are really cool as well. They're not 1 animal, they're actually a bunch of animals living together. Portuguese man o' wars are siphonophores.

And I'm sure you've seen a pic of one of these sea slugs before, never pick one up. They feed on the Portugese man o'wars and can store the stinging cells from the man o'wars to use as self defense.

I love deep ocean stuff.

I wish we would spend a fraction mapping the deep ocean that we do go into space. We should build movable generation bubble sphere colonies in the deep ocean for people to live in while they work down there. They can get their power needs from a string of deep thermal vents.

Everything we develop and learn about dealing with the deepest ocean pressures would be beneficial in space eventually.

A couple other cams that are worth checking out are the Aqualink Hawaii and Harbour Village. They're stationary cams underwater but you still get to see some cool stuff.

Yes and no, totally depends on the species and what you are trying to achieve with them. For instance we have black rat snakes at the zoo, the one on exhibit with rattlesnakes gets brumated from Nov-March and the one in education is up year round. The female (was a failed Ed animal because she kept biting ppl) had never laid eggs before But once we move her to the exhibit and started brumation she has laid eggs the past two years in a row. So it’s definitely necessary for the reproduction in some animals,
