oh, and if it comes to melee weapons the best tool is your feet. Run like a bitch. If you are cornered I guess most any decent range blunt weapon would work. Honestly if you are cornered without a firearm you are as good as dead.

As for my reference to a .50 caliber sniper rifle used to fire at enemies center mass, the same rules apply as the rules for the katana. Most people cannot fire 1000 yard headshots and would be better served to fire at center mass instead of hunting for head shots at 1000 yards.

I never said I was taking headshots at 1000m, 400m at the most, beyond that I'm pretty much ignoring them. COM shots don't guarantee a kill on zombies, even with .50 cal, 7.62 to the skull, most effective method without taking up too much weight.

Is it weird that my first thought is how funny it would be to run into that group swinging a cricket bat, and then try to explain to the police that you honestly thought you were defending yourself from a zombie apocalypse.

and anyone suggesting anything other than a katana as a melee weapon is obviously unfit to survive the oncoming hordes.

You sir haven't been thinking of the constant need to resharpen delicate edged blades.

If you can keep a katana blade sharp enough to cut through, say, 1000 necks and the ocassional chunks of dense bone before having to resharpen, I would say fine, go with it.

Also, weren't katanas prone to shatter or snap is pressure was applied from the incorrect direction?

edit- I am ofcourse thinking of melee weapons as primary choice due to their lack of ammunition and ease of upkeep/maintanence. They are also, generally light weight compared to longer range weapons.

I would also like a shotgun and assault rifle with sniper applcation, because there are bound to be occasions when you need them (for example, when there are gun totting nut jobs roaming about). But those would all be for just incase, not the main weapons.
If 99% of the world becomes zombies, you will be running out of ammo quickly and if they can sense where there is fresh flesh, you would need the ability to keep moving fast until you could find a secur environment to settle (oil rig for example).

On a tangent of edged weapons

Heavy, strong if made of the right material and with a good leverage so that if it becomes blunt you can still use the egde to remove limbs/decapitate/cleave a skull apart.

and one of those in the top left as a back up.

You'd want to drill some holes in it though incase it gets stuck in a body cavity and to decrease it's weight


edit- I should also add the top bat'leth can be used along the blade edge because of the grip, so up to a point, the weapon can be used at short range as well as extreme range. Due to its shallow blade length, it's tendancy to get stuck would be limited via suction (less surface area, unless you got it stuck halfway through a torso, but you'd deserve to die if you tried to cleave someone in half when there are rampaging zombies all around).

It also has the ability to be thrown and due to the weight, it would probably take 2 out if it was thrown with force

I disagree. I think they are on permanent "survival of the fittest" mode, and are activating all muscle fibers all the time - basically creating a 1RM-type neuromuscular response at all times.
