I wish I had a truck with my face on it.

Haha, I don't think they do. But that's one of many derogatory insults I've heard people use to describe Crossfit.

Damnit! I thought it perhaps was some local unaffiliated Crossfit gym :D

My BJJ instructor pushes his fighters and BJJ competitors to do CF and I believe does it himself. Here are some of my anecdotes:

1.) The workouts seem insane for people starting with a low level of fitness. Example: a workout where you have to do 20 bodyweight pullups, then bench press your own weight for reps, then run a half mile with someone on your back.

2.) There doesn't seem to be a way to progress to the full CF workout. The people that I know that have to "cheat" to complete a workout, are cheating a year from when they start. For some reason progression just doesn't happen, however weight loss does occur.

i dont understand crossfit, at all.

it looks like a giant clusterfuck of unsafe stuff that beginners or even average joe gym enthusiasts should not be doing. the forms they show are downright scary, and often times it looks like theyre doing nothing at all.

im nothing remotely close to some gym stud, but it just seems like a new fad bullshit routine thats being overhyped. theres 0 structure and/or set goals.

So far I haven't had anyone really defend it.
I think there is a place for it. But like people are saying; its all about what your goals are, right?

I just really, really, really don't like the high rep power cleans and such. Power cleans are used to build explosive strength. How do you build explosiveness with the powerclean when you just ran a half mile, did 20 burpees, 10 pullups, and are on your 3rd powerclean......7th set?

Fuck.

Lets not go overboard here. People are calling Crossfit dangerous like its a loaded machine gun. You are going to see more injuries in a pick-up basketball game than a Crossfit workout. Crossfit may be cultish but IMO that is a good thing. Any kind of cult that is going to get someone off of the couch and exercising is a great thing. They package it very effectively so that a complete beginner can get started on a path to fitness extremely fast and easily. It really does blow my mind that something that is so effective at getting people to exercise is looked down upon so much.

There's nothing to defend CF is horrible.

From reading most of the response on this site, I would agree with you. However Dirty Holt had a good point. People are getting off their asses to get involved. And that is always a good thing... I have seen an explosion at the "functional fitness" gym in my town... A lot of those people are beginners. They're seeing something new and exciting and interesting. Maybe one day they'll realize its limitations and move on... But its what got them off the couch and in to the gym...

Well other than what's already been mentioned, there's also the weird Jingoist Marketing they use, and terrible taste in music.

im all for people getting motivated and getting active. thats fantastic.

however, go watch most all of the cross fit videos of them having people lift. that shit is very much a loaded machine gun like you say.

sorry but some girl who has never lifted shouldnt be trying to power clean 140 pounds her first day, lifting with their backs and what not.

Where does an injury put you ? Back on the fucking couch. So congrats CF, you get people off the couch and put them back on there.

I'll agree with Holt, it's not as dangerous as a loaded machine gun. Then again, not many things are. But that doesn't mean they're not dangerous.

I think what you're getting mixed up somewhat is circuit training and Crossfit. Circuit training definately has it's place IMO (particularly when not used with oly lifts lol). It's CROSSFIT, that people don't like specifically because of their way of going about doing circuit training.

Someone a while back posted a list of the exercises that the WOD had you doing over the past year, can someone help me remember where its at? Because looking at the list you realize why no one ever progresses while just doing to prescribed WOD

I hate that crossfit is claiming that it well help you not only finish, but place well in ironman competitions. Sure for sprints and that's about it.

Would I be correct in saying that if I know a fair few lifts, exercises etc and pretty much threw some together in anyway I think makes sence I could get similar results to crossfit?
(with all the benefits and risks that provides)

I never understood the hate for CF as what I have read seemed like decent workouts but after reading this I wonder would I be correct in saying the biggest issue with crossfit is the matching of workout level to fitness level per client?

I personally think that is pretty much the main thing I think a program like this should provide.
