I am curious. In 2006, I found these forums seemed to support this concept. now I get the impression it is not...

At first I must admit I was tempted to get into it. But I have seen some things that were pretty weird, dangerous, and unnecessary

You answered why must of us don't like it in your second paragraph.

Arlecchino is the only one here I know who loves it.

That's what I thought. I am just surprised at how the climate here has changed...

My MMA coach is obsessed... He trains, coaches and competes. I just like the simplicity and reliability of conventional strength training...

I don't even know exactly what it is but it seems kind of cultish and people were getting in shape before it existed. I'm kind of traditional when it comes to getting in shape.

I liked it before it was popular. A buddy and I did the WOD before Judo class when we were in college, back in like '04. There was only the one official Crossfit gym back then. CF got me into doing powercleans, deadlifts, chinups, and some parallel bar stuff. Never did sumo dl high pulls for time though.

Now I think Crossfit is a cult and will probably morph into some kind of pyramid scheme. It's way too evangelistic now.

For me personally in the context of people I know who are interested in Crossfit or practice it here.

1) People have the wrong ideas about what it actually does for them. There are actually a lot of fool out there who think it'll make them big and strong.

2) Many places (at least here) don't emphasise technique with the barbell at all. They just throw people in there and have them doing powercleans etc. with no real instruction. Yes, they're using low weights, but they're doing high reps and while they're tired as shit. It's a recipe for disaster (especially for the back) and as if the universe was out to confirm my fears, my neighbor herniated a disc big-time after a few months of crossfit.

I'm sure it's a great endurance workout if you have the technical part down, but throwing people in there without preparation is crazy. There's a reason guys are reading books and posting form checks on forums like this. It's because technique matters and takes time to master.

Odd, I've always seen very little support for it here.

Also, ANY organization or sport that treat a life-threatening condition like this is problematic:

So assuming technique is emphasised and followed, would you recommend it?

And how would you schedule it into the week for say a person who likes to stand up as a hobby?

I don't feel qualified to answer those questions. It would also depend on your specific goals. I do like the idea that you like "to stand up as a hobby" though :)

I tend to sit down a lot or move around a lot. I rarely just stand up :icon_chee

I neither love or hate it. I've never seen a CrossFit gym or met anyone who has been to one or goes to one. I see it is probably not a great idea and I am sure that the "elite" thing would be annoying, but with most of those guys safely 4000-6000 miles away from wherever I am, they are just something I have read about on the internet, just a weird fitness thing that people in some foreign countries (e.g. the US) do. I can't get mad about stuff that is so remote from me.

Lol I see what you did there.

One just recently started up in my town. I called to find out some info. I wanted to know if I could come and not do crossfit but basically just have access to their bumper plates. I was given a big negative on that one. There are some things that I like about it. I like that they promote compound lifts, oly lifts, and gymnastic type work. I also like the intensity they workout with as well as the competitive aspect of it. Ultimately though the things I don't like about it outweigh the things I do like so it is just not a good option for me personally.

I think some of the things that they do seem dangerous, such as doing high rep oly lifts after being completely exhausted from other work.

It is expensive.

It seems like if a person had access to bumper plates there is nothing that crossfit does that this person could not do on their own.

They seem to do alot of things with no planned progression or any real rhyme or reason as to why they are doing them. This is fine for someone who is just looking to get into good shape, but not so much for an athlete or for someone whose main goal is getting stronger.

Alot of people get turned of by the elitist attitude that CF has a reputation for. When I called the guy he told me that part of the reason that it is so expensive is because they get results, and that if I would come give it a chance then I would see results. I know he is just trying to sell his product, but this did seem a bit pompous to me. I'm not quite sure what "results" he was referring to since I did not tell him what my goals are. Also fairly insulting that he is assuming that I am not getting good "results" from what it is I am doing now, which I am.

If I ever did Crossfit it would be paired up with a proven strength program like 5/3/1 or Juggernaut. Perhaps something to the effect of working out every other day, alternating between 5/3/1 and Crossfit. But like I said before, the reasons above are enough to make me not want to do this.

I think it is a lot like aerobics (and the 117 other things they call variations these days) in that most of what you pay for is the privilege of having somebody yell at you.

I wasn't really lurking the S&C area of Sherdog back then... but when I was I saw more support for it then now... But that's a personal perception.

I agree with you interpretation...

This was my first and most concerning issue...

It can be pretty good, but it is kinda wierd in a way. I tried out crossfit in my city for about a month, and there was honestly nothing that they did that you could not do on your own, as long as you had rubber plates or something.
Also, it is like 100 bucks a month, i dont really think its worth it. There was a few times where we did body weight squats for like 8 minutes, then did some sprints across the gym, and finished with 100 reps of OHP. In total it was like 20 mins of work, class done. I guess it depends on what gym you go to though.
Also, i dont like the whole "Elite" thing that goes along with it. MEGA SUPER DEATH ELITE KILLER WORKOUT OF DOOM. Like most other people on here, i think it would be better to follow a proven and effective training plan, and there is definitly some great conditioning work and things you could do for free. This isn't beating a dead horse at all.

This isn't beating a dead horse at all.

You should always beat dead horses. Otherwise they might come back as zombie horses and it will end up like a cross between 'Seabiscuit' and '28 Days Later'. And who wants that?

This is why I love this forum. I learn something new everyday.

By the way, Me. I totally want that.

Just going to give a test run to see if I have finally figured out how to post pics.
