Your Bantamweight champion everyone

you must be kind of slow. do you really think Gaethje is the same size as o'maley? Everyone cuts weight.. not just him. is this a troll thread?

Read further...the thread is just highlighting the absurdity of weight cutting ..

Here's and interview with 159lbs man who is the 135lbs champion...that sentence right there is a contradiction...

O'malley is a lightweight... If weigh ins are done the correct and fair way like they are in many Martial Art competitions... which is same day weigh in

But because weigh ins the day before are better for business...we have someone who could never fight at 135lbs naturally as CHAMP..

It doesnt make sense...weight classes were made to avoid this exact problem...

Even if no one cut weight, you would still have weight discrepancies between fighters, people don't just walk around at exactly 135, 145, 155 lbs, either you have weight cutting, or you have a guy who is 136 Vs 145 and people will still cry about 9 lbs weight difference

Is it more stupid then people removing 25 to ,30 pounds of water in a short period of time so they can fight in a division they dont actually weigh in?

Simply because nobody's said they cant?
I’m not trying to argue that fighters cutting a lot of weight is a good thing, or that there isn’t a conversation to be had about trying to improve things to prevent fighters from cutting a lot of weight. But under the current rules if simply making weight isn’t enough at what point should someone be considered too big for a division? It’s far too subjective and just allows for people’s feelings to get involved, which is why you see some fighters ridiculed for cutting a lot of weight while others (Alex Pereira is a good example) are almost applauded for how much weight they cut.

But why would u cut 9 pounds when your opponent isnt cutting anything when you could just fight at 145lbs...

You would be a major disadvantage if you cut 9 pounds day of and your opponent cut nothing...no1 would do this...they would just fight 145 lbs and not stress about the 9 pound cut cuz nobody is doing that on a same day fight...

People are only cutting weight...cuz they have 24 hours to recoup...

At max people would dealing with like a couple pounds to make it same day ...like skipping breakfast and maybe no drinks before weigh in type weight loss if its same day...nobody is cutting 10,15,20 pounds of water and fighting the same day ...it just wouldn't make sense...weve seen guys do massive cuts and have no chin 24 hours later imagine same day...

Once again, did you even read the interview with Sean?? The point you're making is the same point Sean is making. He hates weight cutting and would like same day weigh ins and fight at his natural weight class. Every BW is around 155 to 170 and cuts to 135. Just like every LW is 170 to 185. Sean makes the point he can't fight at his natural class because he'd be fighting Olviera or Gaethje who are two weight classes bigger.

The point that @SkinnyClaw is making is that neither guy is cutting weight. His example of a fight where one guy is 145 and one guy is 136 is there is a natural 9 lb difference and no one is cutting weight. These guys don't walk around exactly as the weight of the divisions. They're not both 145 and one guys cuts 9lbs, it's just what they weigh.

Like if Omalley fought Sterling at their natural weight. It would be Sterling 170-175 vs Omalley 158.

Even if thats what he said ...the facts remain ...159 lbs man is apparently the 135lbs champion thats a contradiction and defeats the point of weight classes..

If the weight classes are done correctly , like same day weigh in... O'malley would be lightweight and Gaithje would be a MW if he doesn't diet properly....and im fine with that..

Nobody should be cutting weight..they sure as shit shouldn't be doing to have a size and weight advantage when your supposed to be competing at a certain weight otherwise whats the point of even having the weight class?

If you weigh 145lbs your a FW...

U shouldn't be thinking about BW... Is my point...ur already the size of another division why would cut 9 pounds to fight someone whos not cutting and is at the max for that weight..

If weigh 140 ..u have a choice to make do u gain 5 or lose 5...either way thats manageable

Why r u acting like weights cant be managed?? .. especially for high class athletic people like fighters...

If u wanna fight at 155 you should be 155 or close to it walking around... O'malley is a LW he should be fighting there...and only cutting 4 pounds at max or nothing at the end of camp he should be 155...

This isnt hard...its just a change...

The only reason people wouldnt want to do this ..is because they want to cheat and have the Size advantage and thats bullshit

Who the fuck is talking about height?...u drunk old man.

Im talking about 135lbs meaning 135lbs..not 159lbs people ..like our current 159lbs bantamweight champion
how much do you think sterling weighs? you don't think he weighs the same or more? What about merab or even jose aldo jr?

you cant be serious, 159 pounds is pretty routine for championship level fighters at BW. that's just how it works.

What?? What on earth are blabbering on about?? No one is cutting weight, the point that the other poster made was that no one is exactly the same weight and walks around at the limit of each division. You're always going to get weight differences.

Yeah, but the guys he'd be fighting at 155 are not naturally 155, just as Sean is not naturally 135. If everyone was fighting at their natural weight, it's likely he'd be fighting a lot of the same guys he is now at 135 - except they'd all be in the 155 division instead. Gaethje and Oliviera are not natural 155ers. So if everyone was fighting at natural weights, Sean would still never be fighting them.

Whether fighters should be cutting weight or fighting at natural weight class is a whole different topic.

I addressed your baseless accusations of Sean OMalley which was clearly wrong. You criticize Sean, then you should be complaining about every single champion in the UFC then and not just him. Sean at the least has the same perspective that you do about cutting weight so he's not the guy to go after.

Yeah, 9lbs would be the theoretical maximum weight discrepancy between fighters in the lower divisions if no one cut weight, which is not as bad as some discrepancies with weight cutting, but what if a fighter puts on 5 or 10 lbs of fat when he's not in camp, is he now a different weightclass, just because he got out of shape when he's not fighting?
Now you have 2 featherweights, one is 136 lbs, and one is normally 145, but he got fat so he's 155, so he can't take a short notice fight at featherweight, he has to move up or what, it's just dumb

These are professional athlete's ...theres no he got fat... If u want to fight at certain weight u manage for that... Weight can be managed and athletes understand this principle very well already...

I'll never understand these topics.

Yes, it'd be nice if weight cutting as a whole wasn't a thing. I think it's better for longevity and the athletes.

But to denigrate someone for doing what you're suppose to do is just silly. EVERYONE cuts, especially nowadays. It's been a hot minute since someone like Frankie stays within about 5 lbs of the division to fight because they'd rather have the speed/cardio.

Fact of the matter is, with proper weight cutting and proper training regimen you can maintain 95% or more of the speed/cardio you'd get for being 10 lbs lighter-15 lbs lighter, but now you're 5-10% stronger and bigger, too.

If I didn't cut to 181 from 195ish for my competitions I'd be competing 6'3" 7 foot wingspan 195ers...who cut from 205-210.

Why would I be idiotic enough to sign up for a 10-15 lb disadvantage instead of just cutting like everyone else?

Consider This: The entire combat world understands what I'm saying, and has done so for decades. Even a Century.

The fact that "you" do not, is an indication of your incredible denseness, and that's all that it is.

/ of debate.

What's with the recent weight monitor topics lately? I don't get it. It's literally not only in MMA, but every art in MMA (boxing, BJJ, MT, wrestling)... we cut weight in ALL of those sports when competing.

Be prepared for 1000 furious incel defenses of this guy

If you cant compete against guys your own height naturally , you should go find another sport to play
I find it funny that the terminally online use "incel" as a degredation as if they themselves have any sex lol.
There aren't height classes instead of weight classes for a reason you utter abject clown.

I don't love O'Malley but that ain't on him, the guys fighting at 155 are doing the same and I figure that's the context he said that 'clip' in to begin with.

He's playing by their rules
