Top 5 of all time. Probably #1 or #2 of my era/generation... Edward Norton I'd put up there as well, less range than Hoffman though, IMO.

Never liked his acting, sorry. He did the same fucking character for every role, and when he had to display some range beyond that, he was bad. For example, in the film Red Dragon he's in a scene where he is supposed to be terrified, pleading and negotiating for his life to be spared. It's laughably bad acting, in my opinion, displaying no range at all, just being Philip Seymour Hoffman again. I felt no sympathy for the character he was playing I think because the acting was so bad.

No. He's good though. I particularly enjoy him in PTA's films. He also good in Lumet's last film and that one with Ben Stiller.

Who would be your pick? There's is probably more than one strong choice. He is undeniably one of the strongest.

Well I definitely like Hoffman for sure. Tbh it would be hard to pick a clear #1.. but names like Edward Norton and Christian Bale would be on my list as well as some other names.


To me Hoffman is a great character guy who’s had some really great cameo or supporting roles.. similar to guys like Tim Blake Nelson or William H Macy. Hoffman wasn’t typically asked to carry entire films tho like Bale and Norton and some others.


Interestingly my overall pick Gary Oldman would have a similar criticism against someone like DDL. Gary’s a chameleon but he hasnt had to carry as many films (if I’m not mistaken) as DDL.


But don’t get me wrong -I do love Hoffman. I can’t point out single bad performance by him even if it’s just a cameo. He’s a great actor for sure.
