News Yan vs O'Malley UFC 280, October 22

Not really sure where the confidence in Yan is coming from, especially in a 3 round fight. Sean is a great striker and he'll have a 5 inch reach advantage against Yan who is typically a slow starter.

I'm assuming the confidence is from O'Malley being 0-1-0-1 against ranked fighters, despite being in the UFC for half a decade, and being one of the most overrated fighters in UFC history.

How exactly is O’Malley overrated?
He’s a skilled creative striker, extremely popular and looks for finishes. That’s all.

How is he overrated? I haven’t heard anyone calling him a world beater or anything of the sort. People tune in to watch him fight cause he’s exciting. No one here or anywhere has been calling for him to be champion or rating him high at all. People for the most part have been realistic with what they feel he can or can’t do or what his ceiling is.

I get that this site has some weird fixation/obsession with hating on the kid but at least make sense with the hate.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…He’s good for the sport and in a sport populated by boring stale personalities…It’s good to have someone who brings more eyeballs to the game whenever he fights….That’s always a good thing.

Overrated in what way? If anything he's underrated because he has a personality lol. He's obviously a skilled striker and usually pretty fun to watch, it's just a bunch of losers on Sherdog who constantly hate on him because they care more about fighters' personalities than their actual fights.

A lot of people would rather have the sport die than have an exciting fighter with a personality pushed by the UFC to bring in more viewers.

I care about fights and that's it, I love fighting.

O'Malley is overrated because you have people declaring him as the best striker in the division, and a "highly skilled striker".

He's not, he's a can crusher with some basic skills who uses his good speed and range to style on scrubs who can't really fight.

Against the two best opponents of his career, his striking suddenly didn't look so elite did it?

As above, I've heard people state things such as O'Malley is the best striker in the division, and that Yan won't be able to compete on the feet and will have to wrestle :D

I mean fuck, the mere notion that the Chito fight was a "fluke" shows how overrated he is. As if he couldn't possibly lose a striking battle to a solid fighter like Chito, it has to be a fluke.

“You” care about fights and that’s all. Nothing wrong with that…That’s fine but there’s the business side of this too. I’m all for anything that grows the sport. A fighter like O’Malley can do that because he does garner alot of attention. Regardless of the level of competition the fights have been exciting and we’ve all tuned in.

It’s easy to tell that O’Malley is talented. Anyone denying that is just extremely bias to me and can’t look past the hate.

I personally feel that Yan is underrated and will obviously take this fight. I think O’Malley has some physical attributes that can make it interesting for a bit but at the end of the day, I feel he’s outmatched. I don’t see a scenario where O’Malley wins.

That being said though, I don’t see how a lose here “derails his hype train” as some have said. The kid is already established as an extremely popular fighter that the UFC has chosen to back. Win or lose he will be fine moving forward. A loss for Yan though would be devastating.

O’Malley has about as much chance at winning this fight as Elvis Sinocic does. The UFC is so desperate to find its next McGregor that it’s willing to just burn every prospect alive until one sticks. Terrible match making. Yan via showing up.

This clearly isn't the case, you're letting all the drama around Sean cloud your judgment into thinking that Sean isn't a skilled striker. Against Chito he struggled with the leg kicks, he clearly learned from that and was checking most of Pedro's kicks and was busting him up. Like Pedro literally didn't land a punch against him while Sean had Pedro's eye busted by the first solid punch he landed.

Why would I care about a guy beating up on plumbers? When he actually manned up and fought someone decent he got finished, and had to try to cheat to beat the other one. He is incredibly overrated.

You're just another Sherdog casual I guess.

Come on O`Malley a "prospect" <Lmaoo> He is longer in the UFC as Sandhagen, Yann.... and had more fights. He got built up very very cautious but lost or looked lackluster when facing someone actually ranked. He is not an elite prospect by any means but a glorified can crusher who celebrates his "win" vs. Chito after loosing the first round and ending the fight to an nc via eye poke. And Chito was handpicked as a ranked opponent. Its a big step up vs Yann but for how much Sean talks and he makes that is what he needs to do. His record is simply crap and that after years in the UFC.

I don't know who to root for.... let's hope for a double KO

His haters are fucking stupid. They actually think Munhoz was winning the fight when he faked the eyepoke. It's a win for O'Malley for anyone who knows fighting. Just like Charles is really the champ even though they fucked him outa his belt.

suga is gonna be on his bike trying to hit and run. It will be cool to see yan get to face someone who wont try and grapple him

Very cool matchup. I’m glad that they’re no longer holding back on matching up O’Malley with proven, solid opponents. This is a gigantic step up in competition, and Munoz was already a huge step up too.
Petr Yan is one of my favourite fighters in the entire roster, but I think O’Malley can go pretty good against him. Curious to see what Yan’s approach will be. He shouldn’t shy away from the fight and take a very conservative approach like Munoz did.
Very fun match! Glad to see Yan back in action!

In a 3 round fight I think O’Malley has a decent chance. Yan is a notoriously slow starter that drowns his opponent in the later rounds.

O’Malley will have a significant reach advantage, if he can stay on the outside and pepper Yan with shots I can see a path to victory. Not saying I think O’Malley will win but I don’t think this is some public execution like some are suggesting.

It isn’t
