To be fair, great defense in basketball is much harder to tangibly measure than great offense. Defensive box plus minus much less indicative tham offensive. You really need to watch games more so than see stat sheets to know who the great defensive players are because so much is about positioning, presence, and forcing missed shots, none of which show up well on stat sheets. Blocks and defensive boards and steals only matter so much.

Well yeah, and Embiid made the All Defensive team this year while Davis didn't and Embiid did that while also carrying the offensive load of a 1 seed.

I'm not being hyperbolic when I say Embiid and Simmons are the 2 best defensive players in the league

Location checks out.

I don't really have an opinion, just making an observation that there's more subjectivity. You think either of them will win DPOY over Gobert?

@Jesus H. Sherdog, remember that raking a dude's eyes Jon Jones style isn't a flagrant.

I thought SVG and the commentators did a good job of explaining why it wasn't a flagrant. It was incidental, not intentional. Green was out of position guarding two guys in transition.

LBJ also got a ton of favorable calls in that game. He ended with, what, 2 fouls?

Also, you're correct that AD is the best defending big man in the game. He can lock down all five positions.

Simmons is one of the best defenders in the league. Embiid I think is a very good defender but Davis is an all time defensive anchor. Davis missed a lot of time this year, I don’t think he’d qualify for all defense.

Gobert won the award Yesterday. Embiid's problem when it come sot winning both DPOY and MVP is that he can't stay healthy. Simmons did make 1st team All Defense and I think he'kk win one eventually. As I'm sure you're aware a bit of your past reputation goes into winning it and Gobert currently has the rep....but as Simmons said....

"I'm one of those guys who can guard 1 through 5," Simmons said. "Obviously, there's a lot of respect for Rudy. I know what he's capable of. I know he's great down there in the paint, but he's not guarding everybody and that's just what it is. He guarded me in Utah … I had 42 and apparently I'm not a scorer. It is what it is, but I have a lot of respect for him. At the same time, I think it's mine this year."

Simmons should have won dpoy though, he was the most impactful defensive player this year.

Well hopefully we'll get the head to head match up in the Finals so we can watch Embiid put up 30 a game as he shuts down Davis night after night

Both hands raking the man's eyes unintentionally?

Well embiid is going to get his, he’s too unique of an offensive player to be shut down. Davis completely changes the way the Lakers are able to play defense by virtue of his ability to rotate so quickly. There is a misconception that great defense is shutting down the man you are “guarding”. Davis gives the lakers chances to reset when he covers the weak side in a step or two. Embiid and Gobert are as good as Davis when attacking players are funneled to them, they protect the rim at an elite level. Davis does this but also makes an impact by getting out on the perimeter and forcing pick ups and closing lanes. He’s just way more versatile.

And like I love Joel Embiid, I think he’s one of the most uniquely gifted players in nba history and should be MVP this year if he played a full schedule. I would root for him to beat the Lakers.

If Draymond Green was a hockey player and pulled the stunts he does he’d probably not be in the league anymore as other players would be going knee on knee with him and slashing at his teeth.
