Never thought about that but I think that’s true with the classes. I think the beginners class does focus on a lot of submissions but when those people actually get to roll, they don’t have a chance to really get that. Open mats pretty much becomes learning defense then getting comfortable enough to try to advance position (escapes), then controlling, then finally a submission attempt. Makes it really weird to think about why you’d need to drill a sub early on other than being trained to know when you should tap I guess.
Was he making the point you can be riskier with submissions if you don’t fear losing position from it?
Both I think, roll better in the beginnng and take more risk
