Would you totally remove social media or improve it somehow?

If you had the power to remove or eradicate social media, would you do it?

Or instead make it better? If there is a way, of course.

Life was better pre-social media, but also much less convenient. I wouldn't remove it. I'd keep it open and free but without all of the crap the left has done to stain it. No cancel culture. No "these words/subjects/ideas/things are off limits". Etc. It'd be completely and totally 100% open and free for people to say and do whatever they wanted, within the limits of the law. If it doesn't break an actual law, there is zero risk of it being taken down, silenced, demonetized, cancelled, gated (limiting its reach), etc.

You've got teenage girls posting selfies refreshing their phone every 2 mins to see if anyone liked their duck face, so that they can get a dopamine rush when they see someone hit "like".

I don't mind instagram so I can keep up with friends. There's some content that I find useful, but I would get rid of the doom scrolling feature on it and from youtube. You could doom scroll and not notice a couple hours just pass by. What a fucking waste of time.

Humans are fundamentally very social, and very tribal. And what that means is that if you voice an opinion which goes against the consensus of the tribe, you risk ostracization from the group.

This has a number of horrible consequences, including self-censorship to avoid upsetting the group.

Anonymity is what permits people to share contentious ideas without risk of social ostracization.

You can’t remove social media and doing so would infringe on ppls rights and some rely on it who don’t have access to other firms of communication such as cell phones etc etc .


It’s not a question of improving it because that needs to be done , to many spyware and identity theft and personal information to easy to access , some sites make it more difficult to gain back account info and easier for the criminals , also this AI thing that decides what is appropriate and censorship has to go in a lot of places,comments are being deleted purposely that don’t fit the agendas of who owns certain networks .

Why isnt there a "I would leave it just the way it is" option?

I love social media, it works great to keep in contact with a large group of family, friends and old acquaintances that I would've lost contact with decades ago if not for Facebook

I also use it meet new friends with similar interests like pitbulls, Michigan Wolverines football and pro rasslin

Its also a fantastic resource to find out about upcoming events in my area that i may be interested in, things such as concerts, sporting events, festivals, fairs, farmers markets, church gatherings, etc.

Its also a solid news source if you use it correctly

It works awesome for me, if you have trouble with it then its probably cause you seek out the bullshit and purposely try to wallow in the misery just to complain about it and making changes to social media isnt gonna fix your stupidity

Do you feel ostracized in real life ? i don't feel it. Because I tend to express my opinions in a moderate way, because I engage my personnal citizen responsability. I can go against the group, but only a group of morons would ostracize me just because I think differently. That should be the same with Internet Id. But I agree that it would probably kill trolling. Did you live before the internet ? I did. Nobody around me felt more oppressed before internet than they feel now. Anonimity didn't give more freedom of speech, it just created wars on the socials media.

Introduce a call for mandatory 2FA. Ignore all the the posters that are saying it's going to cause nothing but issues then relent at 11th hour. Then a month later have a mystery upgrade that screws up the look totally n then never really fix it.

Considering how frequently I've moved from country to country and state to state I'd be lost without it, I can't be bothered to text everyone individually.

Silly things like old customers posting memories of us meeting Prince Philip, my niece changing career from nurse to bus driver. It makes everything easier.

When I moved to California it was an amazing tool for meeting life long friends through beer get togethers and my Arsenal football bar group.

I think we're getting somewhere.

One of the biggest issues with social media is that it can act as a permanent historical record for everything someone has ever posted online. This permits someone to face social ostracization for comments and statements made years prior.

Perhaps the issue isn't anonymity vs real identities. Perhaps the distinction should be drawn between the permanent and the ephemeral. And perhaps one the better answers to this thread is that social media can be improved by making most comments temporary rather than permanent.

Only thing I don't like about social media is that any idiot can create flavor-of-the-month political content and make money off of it. It doesn't really affect me personally, but I've had close friends go off the deep end because they lacked the critical thinking skills to navigate the sea of troll piss and Tokyo grifts. Some to the point where I can no longer connect with them irl due to their autistic obsession with "politics".

There should only be one place to discuss politics, and that is the Sherdog War Room. Everything else should be memes, people getting hurt doing dumb shit, and Indian street food. Those are topics which bring us all together as a global society.

Internet did not invent the permanence of writing neither. If you write anything and share it publicly, you are right to expect that it can be found anywhere anytime. If you don't want anybody to use against you anything you wrote, said or whatever, just refrein. It's humanity since the invention of writing. You think as someone that can't refrein anything, that's Generation Z in a nutshell.
