WMMA Discussion #29

yeah i reckon jas too. savage and loopy are good, but you need a little extra something to get to the top of sw (or be carla esparza)
I'd say Gillian's got a way better shot.
First she's six years younger which is huge.
Second she's showing steady improvements with din.
Third her ground game is the best of the three with a lucky backtake/TD I could see her beating anyone in sw by sub even today.
Fourth Zhang and Virna both will age out and leave the top of sw wide open.
Fifth Jas has a younger better flyweight wrestler in Erin ahead of her.
Sixth Jas will only get one if any title shot then her age will start to be a factor.

Sani BrΓ€nnfors vs. Liane Barros

this one is interesting - brannfors is 16-1 as an amateur, is 5'2" and fights at bantamweight. this is her first pro fight.
her opponent is liane barros, who is 3-2 as a pro and is 39 years old, having only started fighting in 2022.

i'm guessing this is supposed to be a squash match, but a part of me is hoping for another danielle misteli type upset 😈

ufc picks this week - the "no brazilians" edition

- tainara lisboa has better striking than luana santos (it's "no brazilians" in plural, i'm allowed one)
- elise reed, she seems to have a better process than dee gomes. dee has looked meek in recent fights which is a head-scratcher.
- tecia is the veteran pick here over luana pinheiro

Invicta FC 62: Lehner vs. Rubin
will air via CBS Sports Network at a new start time of 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT. The night's preliminary card will stream live on Invicta’s official YouTube Channel and Facebook Page at 8:15 p.m. ET/7:15 p.m. CT.

Below are the results of the event’s weigh-ins:

Bantamweight: Katharina Lehner (137)* vs. Olga Rubin (135.7)
Flyweight: DeAnna Bennett (126.8)# vs. Rayla Nascimento (125.6)
Flyweight: Milana Dudieva (125.7) vs. Amanda Torres (125.8)
Strawweight: Ashley Barrett (115.8) vs. Quinn Williams (115.4)
Flyweight: Charlsey Maner (125.9) vs. Alex Lawal (125.5)

* - Lehner missed the bantamweight limit of 136 pounds and was fined 25 percent of her fight purse

# - Bennett missed the flyweight limit of 126 pounds and was fined 25 percent of her fight purse

Picks of the week:

Going with Pennington on this one... But i have a feeling Pinheiro may pull an upset... Still... Pennington sees to be more than capable of grinding a decision out of her.
Going with Gomes by decision just because i can't believe all of Reed's losses in the UFC will end in a finish.
Going with Luana Santos not because i think she's better than Lisboa... But i can't trust someone coming from a 1.6 year layoff due to a serious knee injury.

For Invicta... Well... Rubin and Dudieva should win tonight.

Coming off the IMMAF scene I would expect Brannfors to compete at 125. The IMMAF does same day weigh ins, so most alum have dropped a weight class after (Manon, Leah McCourt, Bolander, Sabrina de Souza all jump to mind).

In fact the only 2 women I can think of coming off the IMMAF scene that haven’t changed weight classes since turning pro are Michelle Montague, who admitted to cutting weight daily for the IMMAF tourney & Nina Milosevic, who I think has had a few 130lb catch weight bouts.

Lisboa should be able to easily outstrike Santos. If Santos can hit throws, she might be able to win. Lisboa has looked pretty solid to me, but she hasn’t been tested by anyone that good yet.

Gomes is young, so she could randomly improve at any moment. Kind of hoping Reed gets the W here, but I have no idea how this one will go.

Tecia should be able to beat Pinheiro, if she can’t, I would say it’s time to hang them up.

i'm watching RWS and the women's bout ends with the fighter calling it off due to eye injury. the bruise is right in the inside of the bottom eyelid - reckon would that be from an elbow?
