Signings/Scouting WMMA Discussion #29

Well I am happy I was wrong and Jessica was able to land good shots. Dern's striking is bad, defense is non-existent and she continues to struggle with takedowns, surprising when you consider her Father is known for them.

How in the fuck did one judge give the other fight to Ricci 27-30?

Dern got away with being so sloppy for so long due to have a good chin on her. Andrade put a stop to that, at least temporarily.

30-27 Ricci? New York gonna New York. People talk about Vegas corruption, but New York invented corruption in fight sports

Good fights last night.

Jéssica Andrade vs. Mackenzie Dern. Andrade followed her team's game plan. Patient striking with vicious punches to the body that drained the energy from Dern. Avoided ground tangles. Used her experience to remove Dern's ability to continue. She gets the second round KO, earns a $50 K bonus and is back in the mix.

Lupita Godinez vs. Tabatha Ricci. Loopy notches her fourth win of 2023. She's tightened her game and shown steady improvement since starting training at Lobo gym. Walked Ricci down with tighter and more significant striking. What a year she's had.

I thought Dern's striking looked improved, offensively anyway. She landed some pretty good combos on Andrade and even semi-rocked her a couple of times.
Her defense is still nonexistant of course which coupled with her wild aggression isn't a problem against most 115 women... except Andrade and her, erm, unusual power.

(also Dern still lacks reliable ways to get it to the mat, which is probably her (or really: BJJ's) biggest insurmountable issue)

I thought we got treated to two great wmma fights.

Loopy is really improving under Grasso, her wrestling was always top notch now she might be a real contender with striking to match. Could tighten up her defense a bit getting dropped multiple times isn't a good look. Ricci was tuff but her striking needs to improve if she wants to go up in the rankings. Miner scorecards were trash.

Andrade did her thing. Din Thomas made a great observation that dern should have kept her striking coach who made such improvements with her. And POTN to Andrade which is always great to see.

The gulf between jessica's striking and mackenzie's striking was huge. jessica basically rolled with most of mac's punches and never got hit hard enough to activate "brawler mode", thus enabling a chill jessica to remember to use leg kicks and head movement - it was great. chill jessica is my new mythical fighter :D
i agree with xuh on dern's striking - i saw double jabs, combos and even a bit better footwork? but her tells were obvious and her chin was very vulnerable in exchanges. probably don't wanna get hit like that too much in the future...

Amanda Ribas vs. Luana Pinheiro. The former roommates weren't afraid to put on a great show. Pinheiro came out like gangbusters swinging haymakers and darting side to side. Did a lotta damage to Amanda's face which was swelling up like she'd been stung by angry hornets. Ribas gritted out the second round evening things up with a more kickboxing oriented approach, getting the better of some exchanges through combinations. Round three Amanda found the angles, finishing a worn out Luana via a well timed spinning kick and heavy punches that knocked Luana down and set up a barrage of ground and pound. This earned Ribas the TKO and a well deserved performance bonus. She may not win every fight but man Ribas has heart and is fun to watch. She's also one of the best during post-fight interviews. Her post fight interview with Olivi while Amanda is wearing dark sunglasses is hilarious.

Lucie Pudilová vs. Ailin Perez. Perez dominated the fight mainly by wrestling Lucie to the ground and outperforming her. Did you see the shiner on Ailin's eye going into the fight? Someone in the PbP thread shared an insta post from someone I never heard of saying Joselyn Edwards gave her the shiner. Something to the effect that Edwards KO'd Perez while they were training at the PI. That Perez' coach rushed in, knocked Edwards down and choked her out. Would like to know if that is true or bs because that is a dramatic story.
