Signings/Scouting WMMA Discussion #29

Hopes:
Cachoeira loses, just bleed happens
Robertson wins, bonusworthy strangulation
Rocky Theme Plays and Pennington yells "TECIA I LOVE YOU!" while holding the belt

And cause fighting is violent and whatnot, here's a cuteness overload:

@fortheo thoughts?

Crikey, just slightly accidentally realized (was googling something else) that Pennington is only two wins (one if she wins tonight) away from tying Nunes' record of most Wins in UFC ladies divisions. Sure helps sticking around forever.

Is she also the 2nd longest tenured (from Nov 2013 TUF finale) female fighter? I can only think of Tate and Andrade who were there before her and still around, but as Tate was gone in the meanwhile she cannot count here. 1) Andrade 2) Pennington?

Did she not also retire for some time? Granted, if she technically did stay in the testing pool etc. (so not "official") then I clean forgot her. Thanks.

Maybe unless it's a Tate situation where they explicitly leave to do something else/fight somewhere else, it's splitting hairs anyway I guess.

I hear Pennington and the other girl fight was really bad. That was too easy predict. When that title fight was book I popped up here to say that my excitement level was as close to 0 as it could get. I don't even watch MMA anymore and I could see it would be crap. I am going to be brutally honest. I have been extremely disappointed in 135 and outside 1 or 2 fighters I have no interest in watching that division. The UFC should have started their 105 division a long time ago instead of carrying around the corpse of 145 and the nearly dead 135. That is just my opinion and it probably ain't worth much these days but I had to get it off my chest.

I didn't think the fight was that bad - it was more competitive than rose v. carla 2 at least...

the bw roster still mostly sucks but that doesn't mean that compelling fights can't be booked - think back to Irene v. Lucie, or Karol Rosa v. Lara Conopio - fighters who were more or less unknown at the time of those fights and their performances really made people take notice. I don't think it would be too difficult to make good fights happen in an underwhelming division - hell, people still watch heavyweights fight

ETA: lara's surname is "procopio", not "conopio"

My head hurts. I feel like I've gotten dumberer from watching the Mayra vs. Rocky fight. Pennington is one of the better boxers in WMMA and she was punching the shit out of Mayra whenever they were at boxing range, but instead of staying at that range she kept running into the clinch where she was tied up and often coming out on the losing end. Pennington is a poor clinch fighter yet she kept going to the clinch for some reason which made the fight 10X harder than it had to be.

As for Gillian & Jasmine, they did their jobs. Unlike Pennington, they knew where their strengths were and didn't waste much time getting there. They got the fight to ground where they do their best work and Bob's your uncle, easy dominant wins for both. I was hoping Viana would be able to stay on the feet longer and test out Gillian's standup, I want to see if she still struggles when she can't take her opponents down but they keep tripping over own their feet and giving up freebies.

Also, it's pretty sad that Tainara Lisboa is probably the best prospect at 135. Man that division needs help, though I'm not sure what can be done at this point.
