Signings/Scouting WMMA Discussion #29

The difference in size was more than I expected. Val still got it. Ah well Zhang shot her shot and will be OK as the best SW once she wins a 3rd belt.

Val vs Silva is interesting Silva has stuffed everyone TDs, and should have some speed on her, Val crafty though so she could find any weaknesses.
Val vs Erin, is a pure striker vs grappler. But Val looked to have leveled up her wrestling since dropping rounds to Santos and grasso there, if Erin couldn't get manon down will she get on shevchenko

Erin looked good tonight getting revenge.
Kline also a sharp performance Lucindo just pulled out of a fight the two of them maybe makes sense next.

I watched the Kline fight before my nap until co-main, that was a solid performance but she was "supposed" to win it anyway.

Erin too. Just finished watching that - have to say it is awesome how fast they break the prelims down into singular fights on Fightpass for easy access. That is awesome.

Unfortunately JJ Aldrich vs. Courtney Casey is still broken, even though I wrote a letter to the support about it, been like that for years and years. I must have been the only person ever who has tried to watch it :D

if you're on fightpass try this link: https://ufcfightpass.com/video/213636?playlistId=6459
when i can't find an individual fight i usually search for the event and look for the prelims. hope that helps.

Thanks, I didn't know Fightpass has those annotations with direct jumps to fights and your link made me realize that! That's a neat feature (the time I actually wanted to rewatch this fight I just searched it by hand from the prelim rerun, hee)

Just amused the singular fight shows up on search but has been always broken. I was expecting a "Sure Mittens, old buddy, we'll get on fixing this super important piece of UFC history posthaste!" reply from Dana himself when I sent the support request to fix the fight :D Guess the market for Aldrich vs. Casey rerun is slightly lower than I expected.

Schevchenko/Zhang outcome was not too surprising to me. Former bantamweights tend to beat former strawweights at flyweight. I think Silva is an interesting challenge for Valentina, but Harrison would be interesting as well. Valentina is quite small for a modern bantamweight however, so I’m not sure she has a ton of interest in moving up.

Erin always rubs me the wrong way. It was an impressive win, but I don’t think she’s improving at all. She’s incredibly reliant on her chin, and she’s lucky to be fighting in a division with very few power punchers. Even considering that, I think Valentina & Manon would be able to easily defeat her. Barber, Dakota, Grasso, Silva, & would not be easy fights for her either.

Kline unlike Erin, is constantly improving & is often expressing a desire to improve as well. Her striking technique is getting cleaner, her combos have improved, & her natural speed is starting to show. I used to have some worry about Kline’s ability to defeat women who would be able to physically over power her, & bully her in the cage. However when I look around, 115 is void of women like prime Gadelha, Andrade, Lemos, & Suarez these days & I don’t see any on the come up either.

For Shev even more than the slight size advantage was her timing and distance control. Not just avoiding being hit but giving the impression that she was close enough to get hit so Zhang kept walking into shit all night. Not at all happy with her corner. Shev - Silva should be a good fight as Silva is fast and Shev has started to slow. Not sure how Silva's TDD will hold up as, for me, Shev is the most effective grappler at FLW. Only one way to really know. I do not like Kayla vs. Val as the size difference there is even greater than Nunes / Shev.

Agree with @MajorTB about Erin not improving. Even her out of camp conditioning could improve. Nothing against her personally I just thing she has quite a bit of unrealized potential.

Kline did well, nice to see.

On a quasi-related note I wish people would quit using the term boxing to describe every punch. TMA pretty much features a wide variety of hand striking but how you punch makes a difference. Boxing is a specific style of fighting, and, of course, it features defense and head-movement that is pretty much non-existent in WMMA - Lobo Gym being one of the few exceptions. Shev has pulled things from boxing - such as a very good pull-counter - but her punching technique and lack of head movement shows that her striking style has little in common with boxing. Rather like, say TKD and MT both featuring round kicks. Quite a bit of difference in technique and execution between styles.

Rather like Rogan calling every clinch MT.

Heh, you're not alone, the way she pulls wins out of her ass in fights she's losing is really annoying. She should have like 3-4 more losses on her record but her opponents keep derping at key moments and throwing themselves into chokes, and Cortez was the latest one to do this. Cortez won the first round clean and was having a competitive 2nd round until she inexplicably went the wrong way and tightened the choke on herself while trying to escape, all she had to do was keep her legs wrapped around Erin's and then work to pop her head out, it's a pretty basic escape.

It's probably why Erin isn't improving much, she keeps winning despite everything so she just keeps training & fighting the same way. Unfortunately it works and only Manon has been able to beat her so far, and even she had a close call with the choke out of nowhere in the 1st round of their fight.

Kline actually had a good gameplan for Hill, grapple her early and don't consent to a kickboxing point fight. The early grappling slowed down Angie in the later rounds and allowed Kline to have a lot more success on the feet against her. Smart plan, and a solid win over a vet, I think Kline has a lot of potential if she can keep improving.

Didn't think Weili would get completely dominated, then again, the John Wood curse is real. I think a lot of folks including myself gave Zhang a bit too much credit for her wrestling defence against Suarez and thought it would be harder for Valentina to get takedowns. I was wrong. Valentina put together a perfect gameplan for beating Zhang, pick her apart on the outside, hit her on the way in, and go right to the clinch for takedowns so Weili doesn't get a chance to get anything going. She had Zhang hurt from the knees and body kicks and a bit more aggression could've gotten her the finish. Also check out the ground control technique.

Deep Jewels fight week!

Ye Ji Lee is a big underdog against Ayaka Hamasaki in the main event, but it’ll be good for the future of the women’s divisions in Japan if Hamasaki loses. Time for the old ladies of jmma to move in with their lives. Park vs Saaki should be a fun banger in the co main.

I've been on board with the 'Val is a boring fighter' vibe for a while, although I don't hate it (it does amuse me how angry some of the better fight analysts get about it -I 'understand', too), but I enjoyed watching her work this weekend - watching mastery is entertaining for me. I know (seemingly more and more) people just want to see a rock-em-sock-em brawl and get bored if the fighters stop trading sloppy haymakers for even just 1 minute; what a shame those peasants can't appreciate fine art 🧐

...and if it's women they get it 2x as worse of course, which made it even funnier that after all the 'this sucks ban wmma' during her fight, Islam 'the best male fighter in the world' went out and did the same but even much more boringly

Martins taking on Jaeleen Robles, who’s 4-1 since her debut last year. Good active streak, but probably not enough to beat Martins’ exoerience

Meanwhile Smilla Sundell does not have an easy debut on that same card:

A lot of Smilla’s physical attributes that often helped in Muay Thai are non-existent against Turrey, who’s only an ince shorter, while having the reach advantage. Plus, she has the experience factor in mma. Will be interesting to watch.
