question for y'all..have we seen any standout wmma fighters come from a sambo or combat sambo background? not sure how long they've been competing in combat sambo specifically, but its def going to be an avenue in the future imo.
When I think of standout wimmin sambo fighters a few names come straight to mind:
Megumi Fujii!!!!
Marina Mokhnatkina...
and... umm.... er.... Blue Mary from
Fatal Fury?
I'm a bit dubious about sambo being a big pipeline for womyn into WMMA in the near future. All the 'sambo takeover' fighters are basically kavkaz guys, which is the region with p4p the best wrestlers anyway but they don't have a lot of women in sports for cultural reasons. So, women's sambo seems to have a pretty low talent level in comparison from what (little) I've seen.
For instance back during Rondamania!, M-1 decided to try and catch some shine and launched Mokhnatkina into MMA as the 'Sambo Ronda' (she's 5x world champ or something), she won a few fights... then lost to Liana Jojua, which frankly is embarrassing (erm..... sorry Liana, we can still be friends, right?

). I guess M-1 thought so too because they basically stopped promoting WMMA after that. & since then when I've seen someone being billed as a 'sambo ace' (without any other grappling credentials) my instinct is 'uh-oh...' (and it's always right

). Often they seem to be a 'pretty girl' who 'does sambo' who fails bad when stepping up, or just not that great of an athlete (Mokhnatkina is pretty good skill-wise but has bad cardio... Necrocrawler mentioned Dudieva who was also good for 1 round but then died of cardio in 2/3... and I mention Alekseeva below who also has no cardio).
Generally from what I see top women grappler prospects in WMMA from Europe seem to have a Judo background, from USA or Japan wrestling/judo, and from Brazil Judo/BJJ. Although the euro grils tend to be a bit too 'sports judo'-ey for the tuff and mean world of MMA, being both 'sambo and judo' (instead of just successful at judo) often seems to imply a lower caliber of athlete for women than just focusing on one and being international level good. I guess Irina Alekseeva is an example? Russian wiki says she's a russian judo champ, and has a sambo 'world title' too, but she's in the UFC right now and she's shit. Fedor was famously a sambo/judo fighter too of course, but he was actually quite high level at judo (important, since that's the 'bigger' sport), plus he was a one off........enough waffling from me for now anywah....
