WMMA Discussion #28

So, did Bleda gas because she cuts a lot, because she met unaccustomed resistance, or because her gas tank's not that good? On the size thing, while she was a lot taller than Silva, it seemed to me that Silva's legs were much heavier, Bleda's a bit of a string bean, so perhaps her cut isn't extreme.

There was a lot of grappling against a game opponent.

I do always wonder why no one ever mentions Maia's hands. While not great she does have actual boxing experience and a good counter-right. Her punching technique and set-ups are better from a boxing standpoint than most women in the UFC.

Yea it really frustrates that everyone calls her grappler for some reason when she really is more of a boxer. Apparently she won some Muay Thai nationals yet they keep calling her a grappler

Yes, but she initiated most of the grappling, and that's supposed to be her thing, right? If you don't have the gas tank to grapple, don't initiate grappling exchanges!

She was outgunned on the feet. What was she supposed to do in the moment?

After Natália silva's last two performances, I think I'm becoming a fanboy. It's always great to see a shorter fighter who actually has some ability to fight long and dictate the range. Women's flyweight is looking better by the day.

You got the established women at the top: Shevchenko, Andrade, chook etc etc who are still putting in work.

Then you've got the girls who are probably entering their primes any day now like: Talia santos, amanda ribas, Alexa grasso, Tracy cortez.

Then you've got the younger prospects who look promising like: Erin blanchfield, Natália silva, Melissa gato etc etc

I'm a fan of those three younger prospects I just mentioned and it makes me excited for the future of this once dull division.

Times are changing. Very soon we will debating which is better 115 or 125...

True, she didn’t have a lot of options, but the grappler should tire out the striker in grappling exchanges. I was hoping for some insight into why she seemed to gas so early, if it was simply that the fight was grappling heavy, that does not bode well for her future. Perhaps the dreaded octagon jitters?

She is only 20... Probably signed her too early or we're underestimating Natalia Silva...

Silva put up a ton of resistance and made her work in the clinch more than she was used to it seemed. Then after that, she just had no answers and blew her wad trying to force takedowns that weren't there.. She'll just have to keep improving all around. She's only 20 years old, so I'm sure that she will.

I just caught up on the fights Silva was just a nightmare matchup she's ready to jump into the top 15 anytime. Her own grappling is very good. I didn't know her before the ufc signed her but she's easily the best well rounded fighter on the ufc roster not ranked. I wouldn't even mind them just giving her the #14 spot right now she would chew up Calvillo and moroz justtook an L.
There's alot of weak grapplers or weak strikers in women's flyweight Bleda will style on as she develops into a more rounded fighter hopefully in zombie girl, lipski, Carolina, kim, bolm, a shevchenko, Leonardo and Molly. I just hope her next match is one of those and not someone like jj who could give her alot of takedown trouble.

Other weekend thoughts was surprised maia and moroz played out in a boxing range figured moroz would use more kicking range attacks and that would force maia to use her grappling. Instead moroz really gave the fight away Jennifer always been good at the boxing.

Oliveira is just not good I think the other 3 women in the Invicta tournament would all beat her up too. Vanessa got a nice showcase win here.
Speaking of Invicta 50, I'm not a fan of the tournament deciding champion anymore 3 round title fight with gassed fighters isn't fun.
Machado looks really skilled but I'm not a fan of just backup all fight and land just more then your opponents to win style. Was that just saving energy for 6 rounds or typical her? Winning comes first so good on her. I'd have enjoyed her and Wójcik just fighting fresh in a 5er more I'm sure.
Bernardo looked good again can't wait for her and tennet surely winner is signed to the ufc. Guthrie also looked good maybe flyweight wasn't for her and bw is her path to the ufc.

Even though they said it during the broadcast, I wasn't thinking about how young Bleda is. She definitely has time to improve, though I wonder if a move to bantamweight might not be in her future, whether that's her preference or not.

BW will definitely happen. She only 20 she will grow as age ages. Hell she will probably be a Featherweight before it’s all said and done very few 5’9 women

Jennifer Maia vs. Maryna Moroz. Maia showed her solid experience in the stand up. She stayed consistent and cruised to the dominant decision victory. Kudos. As an announcer pointed out she has only lost to very top fighters.

Vanessa Demopoulos vs. Maria Oliveira. Vanessa’s hustle and aggression made up for the size differential. I was surprised because I’ve underestimated her. Don’t know how she gets in on these taller fighters but she does. Oliveira looked bewildered.

Natália Silva vs. Tereza Bledá. Silva earned a performance of the night bonus. Great finish. Spinning kick. Woo hoo!

Invicta. Valesca Machada earned the strawweight title by winning two fights. Someone was asking if that’s her usual style - it is. Good foot work and it’s catch me if you can. She throws nice uppercuts while darting in and out. Bernardo got a great submission to set up a title fight against Tennant in January. Claire Guthrie had a good comeback performance. Looks like she has recovered from her knee injury.

LFA. I was stoked for the pro debut of Aline Pereira (Alex’ sister). She showed some promise and hits hard. Alas Helen Peralta used her experience to clinch her up against the cage and get the decision.

ONE FC. Danielle Kelly earned a dominating submission victory in ONE FC. It was billed as BJJ vs. Samba and the BJJ won. Hoping they get Ham scheduled again. Hirata too at the proper weight class.

Didn’t catch the other bouts. Overall a good week for WMMA.
