I took it like: despite Stipe's "it was an accident" outer appearance, there's another part of him whether conscious or sub-conscious that was precisely aiming for it. It's hard to imagine there's not a part of him enjoying teh fook out of the karma of it all after what he just went through & just got poked again. That's what I take from it.
