And how would I know he is good? This is the thing that escapes me.
I know a good boxer, judo guy, karate guy etc. by his competition record. How would you spot a good WC guy?
BTW I think we are slowly coming to an agreement here.
Actually i'd say competition record doesnt matter so much in many cases - you want a good boxing coach a lot of them werent great fighters, guys like don familton, freddie roach, emmanuel stewart - didnt exactly rock worlds but they know how to make a fighter.
Grappling arts compete far more often and to a later age, so i'd say thats a good indicator there.
TMAs you need to be careful about - the majority of competition karateka hit like pussies and couldnt punch their way out of a paper bag. The place to look is the JKA All Japan and World Cup, and the Funakoshi cup - anything WKF is worth discounting cos its all bouncing and fannying around. Budo karateka are what you wanna look for.
Much the same with WC - when people put the competitive element into their martial arts training they started to train to those rules to the detriment of their fighting style - like how guys like Barret Yoshida and BJ Penn say people fight for points too much in BJJ nowadays.
I think a little research needs to be done into WC - you need to look for who are the most respected instructors in their community - TMArtists arent delusional and know a lot of guys milk the mystique - but they all know who the proper badasses are.
Look for respectable orgs etc amongst their community - like if im looking for a karate club i look for the names like JKA and KUGB, not things like TASK and TISKA
Its only through asking around you get to know who the good guys are and who are just milking moderate skills for money.
