News Windows 11 finally got me.

Overnight my computer went from working perfectly to not being able to do anything. Have to love being forced into the newest bullshit or have the device you paid for no longer work.

Yeah but now you're protected from hackers.

I installed FxSound a couple of weeks ago and was blown away by the improvements in audio, including volume. Its free.

https://www.fxsound.com/download

Just installed it and wow, sound is so much better now. Also seems to solve that problem that youtube plays sound too softly sometimes.

I might have to try FxSound. I think I might have to find out how to switch from dts headphone controlling the sound.

If I don't shut the computer down for a couple of days, the sound on YouTube will cycle louder and softer over about a 4 second intervals. Shutting down and restarting cures the problem.

I avoid it by having TPM 2.0 disabled, it makes it impossible for them to install Windows 11 when I'm not looking.

I think they also needed people to turn on tpm2.0 which is a big deal for anti-piracy.

I don't know enough about these things. I can probably search for the way to disable it but I do probably need to receive the Windows 10 updates. I know just enough about computers to know that I don't know enough about them.

I've been prompted many times on my computer to upgrade to Windows 11 but from what I heard and read it causes problems.

You go through a time vortex or something and come back and a month had passed? You have to enable/disable TMP2.0 from the Bios. There are tons of websites that detail it. Mine was disabled and I didn't even know it. Pretty funny because it stopped Windows 11 dead in its tracks. Here is one such link but yea, I would suggest you research the topic yourself. Some motherboards don't even have a TMP module, yours obviously does if they installed 11 on your rig.

Here is a link but like I said, you want to look into the topic a little first.

I can't even install it on my computer because I don't have some type of security chip on my mobo. Fine with me, I'm perfectly happy with Windows 10.

Just search on how to disable TPM for your mb manufacturer, its not difficult at all. But before you disable TPM, be sure to disable bitlocker etc which might use tpm, you wouldn't to lose your authentication keys and lose access to disks/volume/whatever.
And I found out that you can rollback to Win10 within 10 days so its not like you're stuck with Win11.

This made me feel old and dumb

Why would they need to release another operating system to accomplish that? Does Windows 11 require TPM be turned on in order to install?
Also, I’m pretty tired of Microsoft’s primary focus, when building an OS, being stopping people from stealing it rather than building a good OS.

Yes Windows 11 need TPM 2.0 capable platforms, more specifically firmware based TPMs, along with other things like secure boot, VBS which is probably why Microsoft decided to release Win11 otherwise it would be confusing to differentiate btwn it and Win10. On balance I think Win11 is the right way to go with the new security features. Its frustrating but we need more security features to better deal with malware/browser exploits. There some minor compatibility issues with some programs but its supposed to be sorted out in H2 2022.

But does TPM actually have to be enabled to install Windows 11? Because basically every system board made in the past 5 years or more has a TPM 2 module.

Either way, I don’t care so much about that as the fact that they sacrifice stability and quality in order to prevent piracy far too much.

Idk if you’ve had any experience with the MS Teams stand alone installer, but it’s a horrendous piece of shit. And it is designed to be that way because they didn’t want anyone to be able to log onto your computer and use your Teams software unless they paid for a subscription. At least as far as I can tell. That’s just one example.
On the one hand, they seem to be moving in the right direction and doing some really good stuff. It’s just that they are doing it so poorly, and not giving two shits about the user experience, that is a problem.
Once I buy my wife a new MacBook, I’m going to out a Linux build on her old one. I just can’t purchase a Windows PC anymore.

.......
Yes, which is why recent mb bios updates enable TPM, and newer Win-11 capable mb's have TPM enabled by default. I think those mb's only have a TPM 2.0 header but don't include a TPM module unless its a enterprise laptop/pc.
Agree with Windows updates causing issues but I think they didn't roll out Win-11 just for anti-piracy, its just an added benefit for M$.

I see.

Yeah, I agree, but also realize that a new OS means more money too. I understand they are a business, and that the purpose of a business is making money.
But that can’t filter down to every little aspect of your business, like how you design the OS. The OS has to be built with the goal in mind of making a great OS. And then, given budgetary constraints, and other monetary factors, you might add or take away things from it to maximize revenue.

Imagine if you went to a restaurant who had their philosophy of business, where every part of the restaurant was designed to squeeze as much money out of each customer as possible rather than one that aims to serve good food. They would have slots in the floor, in case someone dropped spare change, that fed into a change jar. Each dish would be meticulously measured and every ingredient weighed to make sure they got the desired profit margin on each ingredient.
They would’t let you share even a bite of your dish with anyone else, or you’d have to pay a fine. So if your wife wanted to try your food, she would have to order her own in addition to what she already ordered.

The goal when designing the OS should be first and foremost to make a great OS. While money should be considered, it should be secondary. And that has been Microsoft’s problem for the past 10 years at least.

As I posted earlier, I found that I could rollback to Windows 10 and did that on the day after it upgraded to Windows 11.

All hail Ubuntu master class
I’ll be joining those ranks soon. I cannot wait to use an OS that doesn’t shit the bed every day. I just have to wait until my wife’s Mac can’t run the newer Mac OSs snd then I’ll take that thing and put Linux on it.
