News Windows 11 finally got me.

This would make trouble shooting a hardware issue in Windows seem like a pleasant experience by comparison.
Yeah I tried Linux many years ago. Ubuntu, tiny Linux, and I'm pretty sure I tried mint too.

But getting your printers to work is next to impossible. I mean printers are hard enough already, no need to add extra challenges.

I hate windows 10 even. I am still using 8.1 and i intend to until something absolutely forces me to update.

I stayed with Windows 7 as long as possible. and I never updated to Windows 8 or 10. A drug addict broke into my house and took my laptop among other things on December 23rd so I had to buy a new computer on Christmas Eve to check my accounts. Best Buy didn't have any with Windows 7 so I had to by one with Windows 10 which was how I started using Windows 10.

I ordered a laptop online with Windows 7 and I use that for a Microtek scanner and a printer that weren't supported on newer versions of Windows. I don't have it connected to the internet because there are no longer security updates available.

I'm surprised you haven't been updated, Microsoft seems to have it included in updates. I know Windows 7 allowed users to see what updates were available and select the ones they wanted like the security updates. Windows 10 doesn't give the user information on what updates it is installing. It is very insistent on using Microsoft Edge and it was difficult to set a different browser and it keeps trying to push Edge.

My switch back to Windows 10 solved my audio issues. I wonder if it will keep trying to update to Windows 11.

Back in 2021 when Windows 11 first became available, a message would pop up asking me if I wanted to switch to Windows 11 and gave me two choices, yes or no. I always selected no.

The message kept popping up every week or so but eventually the choices changed from yes or no to yes or not now. I selected not now.

Soon the message changed from asking me if I wanted to install Windows 11 to asking me when I wanted to install Windows 11 with the choices being Now, set a time to install or not now so I selected not now.

The past few weeks the message would pop up saying that Windows 11 will be be installed now but it had the option to select not now.

Last night, I fell asleep with the computer on and when I woke up, I found that Windows 11 had been installed.

It didn't look too much different other than some changes at the bottom of the screen.

When I tried to watch a YouTube video, I found out that the sound was screwed up. This computer uses DTS for sound so I clicked the Windows icon, clicked on show all apps, scrolled to the DTS progam and clicked on it. It brings up a screen with some information on the program but no controls and nothing to click on to access any controls. On some YouTube videos I barely have sound with the YouTube sound at maximum and the master volume on my my computer at 100%. I used to run the YouTube volume at about 1/4 and my computer master at 50%.

I suppose I'll have to spend a few hours trying to solve the problem or try to get back to Windows 10.

They set the bar high with Windows XP, and I've never been as satisfied since.

When XP was introduced, it was terrible because so much software didn't work with it. It took almost 2 years before it was stable and usable. Microsoft always wanted to get the new systems out for the year end holiday purchases and the systems often aren't ready. It could be intentional because they don't get enough testing with a small number of Beta testers. When it's released, all the users become the Beta testers and the problems are found and solved through updates. I just don't care to be one of the testers. I did buy a new computer just when XP came out. It was a pain to use so it sat unused for 10 months. I had a desktop and a laptop after that with XP and they worked well. The first computer I bought with XP never worked well even with all of the updates. Maybe the hardware wasn't compatible.

For those that are curious, here's the entire list of gymnastics you have to go through to remove the spying features in Win 10. I bet they ramped up the spying to the moon for Win 11, that's why they want everyone to upgrade.

We got an e-mail from IT a few months back asking to NOT install the update.

A girl who works with me accidentally clicked "Yes" last week. Her Notebook is still being repaired.

I ain't a tech person my understanding is Windows XP,7,10 good Vista,8,11 bad?

I had both Linux and Windows on a computer a few years ago so I could boot to either when I had a printer that didn't work with the then newest version of Windows. I might do that again.

I solved my current problem by going back to Windows 10. Microsoft actually had it setup to do it on the control panel in Windows 11 if you go back within 10 days.

I have a laptop with 2 drives that I run windows 11 and Kubuntu on. I love it. I may switch distros, but I'm married to KDE.

I love Linux... but it's an abusive relationship.

every version of windows sucks. because operating systems are effectively monopolized.

windows 11 sucks just like windows 10 sucked just like windows xp sucked. in the end, who the hell has a choice. no way im switching to ios nor linux

I write programs in several languages.

Only issue i have is with Windows default search functionality. Fuck that

Also Linux sucks

Vista was fine, it just had hardware needs out the gate that many computers couldn't handle. Vista was essentially a Windows 7 prototype in many ways.

You'll become better in basically all facets of programming and computing if you take the time to learn a Linux distribution properly. It's not really comparable in terms of power, security, intrusiveness, cost, creative ability etc.

Inertia is the only thing carrying Windows forward.

I still keep getting the pop up offering.e the free upgrade to Windows 11. I keep declining and keep using Windows 10. My computer works fine and I don't see a need to go to Windows 11. What are the advantages to switch to Windows 11?

One bit change Microsoft has made is that the customers are basically their beta testers now. Idk how much UAT testing they do, but it seems like none. They just let everyone who buys their software do that and report problems to them. The problem is that we’re supposed to be purchasing a product that works.

I avoid it by having TPM 2.0 disabled, it makes it impossible for them to install Windows 11 when I'm not looking.

Microsoft figured out they could make more money by releasing another operating system. It’s that simple.

As someone who works with Microsoft products all day long, including their infrastructure products, I can assure you that their left hand doesn’t know what their right hand is doing. They are just ad hoc coming up with shit, rubber stamping it, and then saying, “yeah, uh… we planned on doing this. Here’s our new patch management. It was our mobile device manager. We just decided it will replace SCCM because we realized some companies were using it that way and decided that they knew our products better than we did.”

Absolutely true story.

I think they also needed people to turn on tpm2.0 which is a big deal for anti-piracy.

I can't even install it on my laptop
