With the unfortunate passing of Thornton, will bare knuckle events be on the chopping block soon? Or will they adapt and implement new rules? As small as MMA gloves are, it’s evident they do play a factor in making the sport safer.

I know he took a brutal fall at a bad angle, and yes the matchmaking was terrible and should be overseen in the future.

What changes would you like to see in the coming future?

The bare knuckle punch itself wasn't the deadly part

It was the dangerous matchmaking. 6-18 guy with 5 KO losses in a row vs an 11-1 standout with 10 KO wins.

The guy got spinal damage faceplanting on to the canvas. That can happen in MMA, Bare knuckle, or 12 ounce glove boxing. But the chances of it happening in a squash match are so much higher

MMA fans calling for bareknuckle to be banned are like the boxing fans calling for MMA to be banned 20 years ago.

I don't mind bareknuckle conceptually. In practice, the big promotions seem to be heavily promoting over the hill MMA guys, who probably shouldn't be taking any more damage. But that isn't an issue with the inherent dangerousness of bareknuckle.

That's why there are commissions. They are supposed to regulate this shit as to not have mismatches. Or people fight who are not fit to...

Yes BKFC should not make certain match ups, but ultimately the commission is supposed to be there to prevent these things happening. Poor regulating.

I’m personally not a fan of bare knuckle events because they seem to be exploiting past prime mma fighter.
It wasn't the lack of gloves that caused it, it was the shady matchmaking.

No gloves makes fighting bloodier, but not more dangerous. You can actually punch a lot harder with gloves.

I wouldn't think so but you never know if this could act as a catalyst for things to come. If someone with a voice loud enough wanted to run out the issue hard enough then who's to say. The amateurish match making certainly doesn't help legitimatize the sport.

Boxing has much bigger gloves and there has been many deaths. it was the way he fell, which is mostly always the case in these deaths. If you look at the deaths in boxing or even deaths in street fights, its never the punch or kick, but its their head hitting the floor. I used to go to college with a guy a long time ago who was paralyzed because his head hit the floor while he fell of a Bicycle.

Thats why people say if you are training BJJ, never ever do a triangle or armbar type move in a street fight, because if someone picks you up and drops you on your head on the concrete floor you can be severely paralyzed or even worse dead

I dont know the Thornton situation, but I doubt it will be banned for that.

I dont really like these types of events though.

It's been posted and I'll repost it - better matchmaking. Why was that dude in the ring? His people should've been looking out for him.

no it shouldnt and hopefully it doesnt

if anything it needs more exposure because I keep missing when these cards are on....
