They want Islam to headline the Abu Dhabi card. Volkanovski will not be ready. Poirier/Gaethje will likely not be ready or willing to make such a turnaround. Rest of the top 5 are coming off losses. It’s not the most enticing match up right now but due to circumstances it’s the one that makes the most sense.

I mean, he beat the top contender. So what about him saying he's not ready, cuz now he is, so what does it matter? And why does Abu Dhabi add to the problems in any way?

Almost every new champ has to beat the old champ twice these days, so EVERYONE'S seeming monotone at first. He's just 2 defenses in, relax.

Then they made a bunch of other fights involving his immediate contenders, Beneil losing his fight and being knocked from contention.

Booking Volk's defense a few weeks out though he seems game to take the fight anyway.

Booking Gaethje/Poirier tok close for the winner to turn around and take the fight.

Islam obviously wants Leon but he's done fuck all to deserve a title shot at 170.

He got his wish of defending his belt against the smallest guy at 145 despite himself being the biggest 155er, now he wants a title shot in a different weightclass.

Guy will do anything to try to get out of defending his belt against actual elite 155ers.

He made this happen by shelfing islam til october.

Islam fought in February really he could have fought dariush in june, then oliveria in october but they are so hell bent on islam for Abu Dhabi, They wrecked the division for it.

Most were convinced OIives would be at a disadvantage in Abu Dhabi on the first fight, saying that it would only be fair to make the fight happen in Brazil for a rematch. So while Olives has a chance to win, I don't think many will be pleased will the result (x and y were never that good etc). Just the usual whining amongst the MMA fandom (both hardcores and casuals).

also I don't believe he's in the obligation of giving Volk a rematch but it is a fight the MMA community wants to see down the line. Not sure myself if Volk will do any better because of time and injuries (although he is a freak of nature).

Finally yes, I complain because the results of these potential match ups will make people complain even worse. It felt like a halfassed patch into a leak, so I want you sherbros to beat some sense into me.

The UFC screwed the pooch with Charles vs Beneil. They killed off the obvious next title challenger with that fight. And they killed Borz title fight at WW when they gave Usman the instant rematch.

These assholes can’t get out of their own way. Almost ZERO foresight by the UFC. That’s why neither Whittaker or Dricus is on that upcoming Aussie card to challenge Izzy (Dricus since Whittaker lost). And why the only legit option to fight Islam in Abu Dhabi is Oliveira.

As for Islam.. He is going to fight in the UAE. That’s just the way that goes. The UFC did not shelve him like someone said earlier. It’s that Khabib/Muslim privilege. That’s where Khabib insisted on Islam CHALLENGING for the belt. They WANT every title fight in Abu Dhabi.

If they have two cards in Abu Dhabi per year Islam will probably be on both. But he will probably try to fight once before Ramadan. Whether in the UAE, or not. But he WILL fight there at least once a year as long as he is a UFC champion. And hopefully once after Ramadan. This is KNOWN. Two fights per year max.

The deal the UFC signed with the tourism board of Abu Dhabi is at least one title fight per card. Or a guy like Conor if there is no muslim champion. And they’d prefer that a Muslim champion will headline. If there is a Muslim champion. He will be on that card as the ME. I guess you could call that shelving, but not in the traditional sense, imo. And it’s to the “shelved” fighter’s benefit. Same with Borz. They don’t have to make weight. They don’t stay in hotels. They stay in palaces of oil sheiks. Pretty sweet gig.

And they will try to load the card with Muslims. Just like Canadians on Canadian cards. UK fighters on UK cards. Brazilians on Brazil cards. Or Aussies on Aussie cards.
