Why is it OK to be racist against Asians?

I think racism is throughout all races. Not sure why you perceive it more with asians. If your perception is true, my guess would be that they are a very small minority and their racism gets ignored compared to larger minority groups.

In North America, "Asian" is just as likely to mean Chinese or Indian or Filipino or Japanese, and is essentially useless for describing stereotypes.

Not really. Maybe in your cabin up in the great north, but you could be Filipino and dark as shit and people will still say your eyes are "Chinese"

Possibly in Canada I guess, never been there ... but at least in the U.S. Asian as an ethnicity is generally is synonymous with "East Asian." Very very rarely would you hear somebody call an Indian "Asian," at least in California. Technically a Persian is from the continent of Asia, but it would strike most Americans as bizarre for them to describe their ethnicity/race as Asian.

And there are certainly stereotypes that are applied to East Asians as a unit, who often complain about the fact that they are seen as identically "Asian" despite their national origin ... Chinese/Japanese/Koreans.

In the UK they use different terminology ... Asian can include Pakistanis, for example, while in the US such a use would seem very odd. Also in the UK they can use "orientals," which here is perceived as a pejorative term.

tl/dr version, don't think semantics are much of a response to the TS's complaints.

It's not just you, I'm speaking on a larger issue. Your whole post you spend 2 paragraphs talking about how you judge people as individuals then you make a stereotypical remark about asians. Why? because you know you can.

Nice of you to throw the victim label on me just for speaking out on a social issue that is rarely addressed, labels like that stop productive discussion. Why don't you throw the victim label on all the white posters here for their 2 million posts a day about white victimization. Why the double standard?

Btw, I am personally not that offended by the asians can't drive stereotype, but I don't like it. It reminds me that people have no filter when it comes to asians. Like in my last workplace people would just come up to me and make stupid offensive racial jokes for absolutely no reason.

Show me some statistics that asians can't drive if you believe it to be so true that an entire race is unable to drive a car due to some innate disability? Why are remarks against asians "just a joke" to you. How would you like it if I said "all white people are racist" but you know it's just a joke.

And why are you generalizing the sentiment of Asians against racism. Most Asians I talk to are in fact very vocal about the double standard, most I talk to experienced bullying and discrimination growing up and many are upset at the double standard, or in the case of asians triple standard:

1)minority
2)politically correct to be racist against
3)can't speak out against it

How do you know that Asians aren't affected by it? we are just like anyone else. Some brush it off, some don't, some actively question it and fight it. I probably know a lot more asians than you and I can tell you that we discuss this issue all the time with friends and family. Not every asian is a successfull hard working math nerd, many are living in poverty or struggling to pay their bills, family problems, depression, drug problems. It's a diverse group, don't generalize or marginalize.

you can call me (or white people anything you want). i adopt the attitude of most asians who are less whiny than you. i dont give a shit

white people are racist- whatever you say. see i dont let your opinion define me.

yet i make that remark and like i said, you turned that into my attacking your coordination and athletic ability. that is astonishing

as for the people posting about white victimization, i think you are off base. for those who do, they are whiny bitches too. i think most of them are just pointing out what they perceive is a double standard.

it just boils down to this. in life, YOU are responsible for your own success. realize that and you will somehow, some way overcome my horrific words

In Canada it's largely the same.

I agree with some the answers but I think there's more to the story than just the cliched "They're successful so it's OK" theory.

I think there are other factors to consider:

1) Economic rivalry with the East and the yellow peril phenomenon, the belief that yellow hordes are coming to invade western lands and destroy their culture.

2) Wars against Japan, Korea and Vietnam, during the vietnam war articles were published in national newspapers stating that asians had pain receptors deeper in their skin therefore they do not experience physical pain to the same level of other humans, basically it was condoning violence against them. There were many more articles such as this all over the country, some even calling for race riots in chinatowns, look it up if you don't believe me.

3) Very different language, culture and physical appearance. The first thing people see is a persons eyes, Asians are the only race to have a distinctly unique eye shape, makes it easier for people to dehumanize them, see them as lacking emotion or less than human. Asian language is extremely distinct and may sound offensive to many westerners which makes it an easy target for ridicule.

4) Lowest rates of violent crime. Seen as an easy target because they many think they won't fight back, it's human nature to pick on those that are perceived as not willing to fight back.

5) Dehumanization in media, this speaks for itself and some of you have addressed it already so I'll leave it be.

you got it right, buddy.

but somehow, some people on Sherdog didn't agree with that point.

Dude, are you kidding me, really? I AM POINTING OUT A DOUBLE STANDARD AS WELL. you just totally destroyed any crediblity you had with that hypoctritical statement.

BTW, I agree with that there is a double standard against whites as well, but this thread is not about that.

i hope you can somehow overcome the vicious vicious obstacles the world has placed in front of you. you are such a hero for standing up for your people.

TS sounds like a whiny bitch. Probably one of those weirdos that tweeted #HowImetYourRacism after he saw this.

As a non american asian I've always come across that asian jokes are pretty non apparent in american media. You rather see black or latinos in cliche roles.

Kinda like you when you made this statement:

"as for the people posting about white victimization, i think you are off base. for those who do, they are whiny bitches too. i think most of them are just pointing out what they perceive is a double standard."

there you go destroying the "asians are smart" stereotype.

you missed on that twice.

YOU said it was a double standard in YOUR opinion about it being ok to hate on asians

I said why i think OTHER PEOPLE post that whites are "victims."

what does that have to do with my own opinion?

second, those are two totally different examples of double standards. yours saying that something is ok to do. the other just saying that people are pointing out a double standard in the media that only cover one side of an issue. its not really a victimization thing for most.

thats what i think a lot of people are missing that keep talking about the white people making these threads and how it must be so tough to be white. i dont think anyone is calling white people victims of anything. they are just getting sick of people acting as if we are the only ones responsible for the evils of the world.

Stop being such a victim! oh boo hoo, whites are getting the shaft by the media. Instead of bitching over that all the time why don't you try to be more productive and study law and finance and be successful like most other white people. Man you're really destroying the stereotype of white people as being hard working and intelligent.

See how that works, hypocrite.

Nice depiction of Yellow face to prove your point.

my point that you're a whiny bitch?

I had a great time while I was in the US and in Canada, no form of racism whatsoever.

Most of my caucasian or black probably can't say that about their time in Asia.

Snitch , In the UK they call "Asians" peeps from India ,Pakistan etc...

so Universally speaking stereotypes for Asians don't work.

why do you keep using what i say OTHER white people do as what i do? that kind of hurts your argument. and also, you must have missed that part where i said i dont really care what you think about me, because it has no affect on me or what i accomplish in life.

i guess thats the difference between you and i. i say asians cant drive and you are distraught over it. you say that whites are whiny and whatever else you said to try to show me how hurtful words are, and yet i gave zero fucks about it.

I will put it down to people taking asians so called kindness as a weakness. I'm not saying asians are kind because that would be generalzing, but I think those who are racist towards asians see them as people who you can take advantage of.

I personally hate racism towards any race, but lately I've seen it a lot towards asians, especially in comments online. You get the same cliche asian jokes, you know which ones. I find anyone who uses those jokes as being very basic and simple minded who will laugh at just about anything that mocks people who they see as below them in some way or another.

Right and your personal anecdotal experience speaks for an entire social issue that's being discussed here.

Hey guys Yodsanan had a good time in the US and Canada, nothing more to see here, he had a good time guys. Nothing more to discuss.
