Why is Gilbert Burns so highly regarded in here?

That doesn't mean people can't make predictions.
I know it just annoys me it's taking so long to make. I wanna see Khamzat against elite competition. Until then people saying he would squash Usman and even Adesanya is just hot air.

Probably because he's the guy who came closest to beating/finishing Usman.

IMO, former training partners fighting are always going to perform better than their counterparts would against ATGs.

Even so, it leaves an impression.

I can see the argument that he has greatly improved his career at welterweight but at the same time, who has he really beat?

- 50 year old Demian Maia
- Post Usman defeated Woodley
- Wonderboy who he hugged onto for his dear life + punched the back of the head. Belal remember the averageness dominated Wonderboy after that.

Had a decent first seconds of the first round vs Usman, proceeded to get his chin cracked and ass beat.

And people are expecting him to beat Chimaev?

It won’t even be competitive. Remember this thread when it’s all said and done.

I didn't know he was highly regarded here, but I'd wager that it's because he's a warrior. We've watched his evolution and it's super admirable for a fighter to evolve the way he has. And he's just an all around fun fighter to watch.

As far as your efforts to diminish his accomplishments, I've been on sherdog long enough to know how to do that for any fighter. Name a fighter and I can write a quick essay on how they're not really that good. Any fighter. Fedor. Anderson. GSP. Khabib. Hell, name my favorite fighter and I can do the same. It's not that hard to diminish a fighter's accomplishments. That said, stop acting like a casual and just enjoy the violence. Gilbert has been bringing the violence whether he wins or loses for his last few fights.

You can make the same argument about the top 5 at welterweight after their opponents get old.

covington - who has he beat?
Old Maia
Deflated Woodley
Out of prime Lawler
Shop worn RDA

Luque - who has he beat?
michael “who really cares” Chelsea
Deflated Woodley
Shop worn RDA

Leon Edwards
Over the hill Diaz
Shop worn RDA
Should retired a long time ago Cowboy

All of the above are beast in their own right, but they came up as their competition went down and none of them fought each other so all of their resumes look about equal
But Usman beat most of them
When did Luque beat RDA

I glanced through some of TS's comments on this thread. He's just disingenuous and then replies either snarkily or in bad faith. No point in engaging with him imo.
Also, preach it brother about Burns. I just hope this is an exciting fight where we actually get to see Khamzat's fighting potential, one-way-or-another.

Ok...now flip it..

Why is Khamzat so highly regarded ...

Who has he beat really.

Handful of guys who half arent even in the UFC anymore...

His best win was Li...who also got dominated by Neil Magny. ..

Has no top wins

Never challenged for a title

Only has 10 wins/fights in his career vs 20-4 burns thats a big experience gap considering the level Burns has fought at

But yes..khamzat is the guy LMFAO

ill take a different approach
hes 7-1 in his last 8 fights, losing only to Usman

I’m sure somebody already mentioned this in the previous 4 pages, but a good number of people here picked Wonderboy to beat him. Many here even thought Wonderboy could beat Usman lol.

Let’s not act like that wasn’t a good win now.

One has been in the UFC for nearly a decade, has not beaten anybody in the top 5 in their prime if we speak of the Welterweight division. Meanwhile you say that Khamzat hasn’t beaten anybody while he just entered the UFC, lmao.
Since you know Burns career in the UFC was mostly at LW its cute how you narrowed the discussion to the WW division. Burns moved to the WW division Aug 2019. Khammy started in July 2020. So not a decade vs a rookie. But again you started talking about "Who has he beat." regarding Burns. I didn't say who has Khammy beaten, I referred your question back to you to answer regarding Khamzat.

So please tell me "Who has he beat?"

You ask, "who has he even beat" and then proceed to list multiple great fighters and make excuses for why they don't count.

I mean there's the real meat of this thread:
TS's bias.

See the mistake you made here is taking TS's argument as rational and reasonable.
Tbh I don't really see it either... Hes not very interesting, and has definitely peaked.

Good ol Sherdog never disappoints. Downplay a win over one of the best grapplers in history of the sport, downplay a win over a champ who had several title defenses before losing to who is arguably the second greatest WW of all time, then let’s finish it off by downplaying a win over a guy who would have probably gotten the next title shot had he won.

1/10 for the troll attempt

It’s not like his career at LW was any better hahahahahah

Most times we have seen Burns lose he was outgrappled which is where he's supposed to be strongest. Alex Oliveira was winning all 3 rounds before a last minute comeback armbar. He got worked by Magomedov, Prazeres and ko'd by Hooker. He really has looked like a different animal at WW though, but for me with those LW's outgrappling him the Khamzat fight just seems like a real tough one stylistically with Burns' wrestling being one of the worst parts of his game comparative to the rest of his game.

Hopefully Burns can drag it into the later rounds because with Khamzat sometimes going 100% I question how he'll look in the later rounds and if he gasses Burns can maybe take over, but mostly I want to see his cardio. Burns has shown some power at WW too, so there is that. It'll be interesting to see Khamzat vs an actual top'ish guy and in a 5 round fight. I just don't like Burns' inability to stop guys from wrestling him, some of the choices he makes IQ wise and him often conceding to a wrestling gameplan by opponents.

He's 6-1 in the last 3 years, the lone loss is to the current champion, and is a highly credentialed jiu jitsu practitioner.

What's not to like?
