Why is depression and anxiety so common nowadays?

What is your theory?
My theory is it's *not* more common nowadays.

but...people just want to be prescribed pills like Prozac or Zoloft or Lorazepam or similar, so they go to their Doc and exaggerate symptoms until they get written a prescription. It's pill chasers.

Thought you would hit me with this

I think it's a lot of things. Air quality, shit food, lack of exercise, 24 hour news cycles, white people, inability to escape bad news even if it's only happening thousands of miles away, sense of entitlement, less people minding their own fucking business.

I would love to smoke because I do enjoy watching a movie or show high, and I love having a huge appetite. But unfortunately I have no self control and can't moderate accordingly. I become too dependent on it for everything and it will make me antisocial and I will focus on all of the negative about myself instead of working on myself.

I've been going to the gym alot and it's really helped me mentally. I've always struggled with confidence and self esteem issues so cutting off things I would medicate on along with going to the gym has helped me tremendously.

I've never boxed or trained in my life so my next step is to start boxing to help me with my confidence. I believe a real man should know how to defend himself and his loved ones. I don't think of myself as a man at least not my definition of what a man should be but I'm gonna work hard to get there and I hope I can show anyone who feels weak they can get there too.

I've identified the problem and now I'm going to fix it.

I've been going to the gym since they reopened them in June 2020 until they shut them down again in November. Gyms been back open since February and I haven't missed a week since. Going to the gym is not only good for your physical health it builds your confidence and gives you a normal routine.

I used to amateur box back in the day. Gave me a strong boost of confidence and I was in the best shape of my life. It's good knowing you can defend yourself and other people if necessary.

Acknowledging you have a problem and trying to fix it is what being a man is all about so you are headed in the right direction

Thanks bro appreciate it. I don't really have too many people in my life that are positive on my mental health so any encouragement is always nice and appreciated.

Because in some bizarre twist, the powers that be made it "cool" to be depressed, which came with some nice benefits.

Same reason why obesity went from a choice to an uncontrollable "disease".

Not to shit on people with actual depression(it certainly exists), but at the end of the day, it's a result of the continuous lowering standards of personal responsibility. They just made the net bigger, and promoted it to people looking for an excuse for their faults.

Taxes.

And "our government" lies to us constantly and wants to keep us hating one another.

Meanwhile those politicians just get fat off our life's blood and taxes.

wE ARE NOT FREE.

Over stimulation is the biggest reason IMO. Constantly having to replace that dopamine hit with something bigger and better is not good for anyone. Everyone has one right in their pocket, a blessing and a curse.

Is it because people have too much free time and are stuck in their minds now?
I heard an explanation about how a big part is social media and just overall technology is a big cause. I think people and kids especially dont have to interact and socialize with others as much in person. So it obviously gives people social anxiety to do so. Just like how you would get anxious snowboarding or doing something for the first time. Its like that for a lot of people nowadays

Obviously a huge part of "depressed and anxious" people are just being little bitches and its fake news, they are exaggerating and are just drama queens. But it seems to be a real phenomenon especially for young adults and teenagers. Whats funny is you rarely hear it being a huge problem among older adults.

What is your theory?
My theory is that thankfully people who have anxiety and clinical depression thankfully are allowed to admit it and aren't shunned from society as a result.
Gay people thankfully have been afforded the same fortune. It isn't anything to feel embarrassed about.

You answered it on your first line. No need to read more. In third world countries they dont have that problem.... people are working, people are surviving everyday.... our society is so easy that we have to create shit in our minds

SOCIAL MEDIA.

Probably a number of factors.

My best guess is the world is changing too fast, our minds cant cope. We have focussed too much on progress instead of improvement.

Life used to be simpler.

People were pretty much born into their station in life for most of history and they learned all they needed to learn by the time they were a teen and then they just stayed in their lane for the rest of their life.

People nowadays are bombarded by bullshit all vying for their attention from 50 different directions and they are expected to learn and understand 101 little rituals to deal with overcomplicated bullshit that you really need a lawyer to understand that 99.99% of people can't afford 99% of the time. Which means you have to operate based on trust, except people know that's how other people operate so now you've got entire industries of people that try to trigger that anxiety in you and present themselves as the person you should trust including the vast majority of martial arts trainers. Except the very act of doing that means that you absolutely should not trust them. So now you either drink the kool-aid or you live in perpetual anxiety until you're in that position that you can afford lawyers and professionals to handle the 101 little bullshit things for you.

My theory is that it is because of the internet and social media. This episode platforms allow you to speak with people from almost anywhere who potentially have the same interest as you. The problem with that being that if you still feel alone you know you truly are because everything is supposedly out there. Before that you wondered, but could never know. Some places are just too overstimulated.

An over stimulating society. We constantly stare at screens, are in high volume areas (traffic, people). Everything is at your fingertips as well. This is the first time in history it's been like this and we're seeing some effects imo

<PlusJuan>

the majority of us all have a similar routine. wake up check the phone, TV is on. Head out to work school etc and constantly checking the phone and laptop all day. Get home turn on the TV with the laptop, tablet and phone on until its time for bed and you still have the phone or tablet in bed with the earbuds until you pass out... repeat.

monotonous existence

People don't understand that anxiety isn't a pathology, everyone experiences anxiety in high stakes situations. You can have an anxiety disorder but that is when anxiety is experienced in abnormal situationa or to an extreme extent.

You pretty much nailed it with social media, IDK if that is the only factor responsible though. I'm wondering if things like diet or lifestyle add to it as well.

Perhaps the spike is just due to more awareness and willingness to talk about it now as opposed to before. I'm sure a small segment of it is comprised of trendsters, but that's alright... better false positives than false negatives.
