Why is depression and anxiety so common nowadays?

Because life has become too easy and people have a lot more free time on their hands

People didn't have this problem when they were running away from wooly mammoths 16 hours a day

Running away from Sabretooth Tigers the other 8
Sounds pretty anxiety inducing to be honest.
Man thats what i was thinking lol

Bit of a myth, Nihilism is very liberating for a lot of people and is super misunderstood, seems to mostly be mistaken for Pessimism, Cynicism and Apathy.

Yup. Lots don't know it's deeply rooted in Bhuddism.

Is it because people have too much free time and are stuck in their minds now?
I heard an explanation about how a big part is social media and just overall technology is a big cause.

Obviously a huge part of "depressed and anxious" people are just being little bitches and its fake news, they are just exaggerating and are just drama queens. But it seems to be a real phenomenon especially for young adults and teenagers. Whats funny is you rarely hear it being a huge problem among older adults.

What is your theory?

Actually hunter gather humans are sposed to have had far more free time than we do today, working something like 5 hours a day.

I'm sure though a lot of mental illness in previous decades simple went untreated though, suicide rates haven't shifted THAT much over the decades, they actually dropped in the 90's before picking up again, I'm guessing the result of more treatment but then off set by worsening poverty and lack of access to treatment.

If you think things have shifted for the worst then perhaps being more socially isolated is an issue? less face to face contact in recent decades even if were nominally more linked by technology, also again more poverty with recently generations more likely to be heavy in debt without the same level of security.

One theory I have heard is that potentially worsening mental health might also have a physical reason due to our selecting socially for intelligence more in recent history. At least until quite recently IQ's do seem to have been rising over the decades and you could argue sucess now compared to say 200 years ago depends more on academic achievement than it did and sucess is a marker for having more offspring. There does in turn seem to be a link between higher IQ and worse mental health, depression, angst, etc so perhaps selecting for it has increased the problem? the same could potentially be true for allergies.

I do wish I could smoke but I just can't handle it mentally anymore.

I feel you

I had to stop smoking weed because it was really messing with my mental state with all the drama that was going on with the lockdowns and especially at work. I couldn't get a good nights sleep even when I was really tired. Luckily, those two asswipes causing all the drama at work are gone for good so I've been back to sleeping normally. Couldn't believe how stressed I was

I still toke up once, maybe twice a week

I don't know if it's more common or it's always been there but repressed/suppressed more so in the past. Nowadays it's seemingly more ok to open up and talk about mental illness.

The stigma is not close to as strong as it once was. It's not as taboo. People are more open to have dialogue about it and not be afraid to express yourself if you feel like you have depression or anxiety.

With the advent of the internet I believe people are more expressive than ever before about their feelings to strangers even. It's a shift in society where people are just more empathetic to others who have these issues.

I think it's threads like these what done it.

I would love to smoke because I do enjoy watching a movie or show high, and I love having a huge appetite. But unfortunately I have no self control and can't moderate accordingly. I become too dependent on it for everything and it will make me antisocial and I will focus on all of the negative about myself instead of working on myself.

I've been going to the gym alot and it's really helped me mentally. I've always struggled with confidence and self esteem issues so cutting off things I would medicate on along with going to the gym has helped me tremendously.

I've never boxed or trained in my life so my next step is to start boxing to help me with my confidence. I believe a real man should know how to defend himself and his loved ones. I don't think of myself as a man at least not my definition of what a man should be but I'm gonna work hard to get there and I hope I can show anyone who feels weak they can get there too.

I've identified the problem and now I'm going to fix it.

I heard an explanation about how a big part is social media and just overall technology is a big cause. I think people and kids especially dont have to interact and socialize with others as much in person. So it obviously gives people social anxiety to do so. Just like how you would get anxious snowboarding or doing something for the first time. Its like that for a lot of people nowadays

It is very common, particularly in women all over the world and across all cultures. I think a breakdown in the family structure plays a very significant role. Traditional families are passe or outmoded now according to "modern" interpretations of human society which is rather unfortunate. Human beings evolved to live and thrive in small groups and tribes. Now, we barely even live in intact families anymore and people wonder why there are so many problems nowadays. Modern society's priorities are all out of whack, imo.

The Amish, for example, have a fraction of the depression rates of people in modern society. There's a good reason for that.

https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=8963&context=dissertations#:~:text=The Amish have less than,10th that of mainstream society.

Less commonly known is their rate of mental illness, which is significantly lower than the non-Amish population. The literature that points to lower depression and anxiety among the Amish does not adequately explain what elements of their lifestyle contribute to this phenomenon. Depression and anxiety are a widespread problem in the United States, increasing the importance of understanding a lifestyle that can reduce these issues.

There's basically no one addressing these issues either. The Democrats think everyone will be better off if we make women "equal" to men (thereby ****ing up family structures even worse), create a totalitarian nanny-state, and redistribute all the wealth. This may result in some people being able to afford more luxury goods but none of it gets to the root causes of modern man and woman's ailments at all. I think the vast majority of energy and attention is going to fight the wrong boogeymen in society while the actual problems just languish and fester.

Because most people are fat and don't work out or do anything besides sit in front of a screen all day. When you have nothing going for you in your life it is easy to be 'depressed'.

Fuck if that's all my life was I'd want to fucking off myself too.
