Why is depression and anxiety so common nowadays?

Life used to be more about a people connection. It still is but the problem is that young people are growing up chasing this social media fantasy. Everyones life on Instagram is so good but my life is not like that all the time. I think it is a constant keeping up with the Jones's situation

Is it because people have too much free time and are stuck in their minds now?
I heard an explanation about how a big part is social media and just overall technology is a big cause. I think people and kids especially dont have to interact and socialize with others as much in person. So it obviously gives people social anxiety to do so. Just like how you would get anxious snowboarding or doing something for the first time. Its like that for a lot of people nowadays

Obviously a huge part of "depressed and anxious" people are just being little bitches and its fake news, they are exaggerating and are just drama queens. But it seems to be a real phenomenon especially for young adults and teenagers. Whats funny is you rarely hear it being a huge problem among older adults.

What is your theory?
Existential angst caused by climate change and exacerbated by the pandemic.

I struggle with depression and my mental health. I had to quit drinking and smoking weed for good because it messed with my mind and head way too much only intensifying my problems and my depression.

I've been 2 weeks sober from alcohol and 1 week from weed. I know it's not that long but you have to start somewhere and everyday I'm becoming more social with people and feeling less down about myself.
That's great Sherbro. Getting sober is the best thing I ever did for myself. It was tough for a while but it gets easier. One day at a time is the only way to do it.

Not sure why I can't like your post but I like your post. Thank you for the kind words. I'm still in the stage where I'm tempted I just take a nap or immediately work out or do something to get my mind off it. This is honestly the first time in 17 years where I'm serious about being sober and fixing my problems/issues instead of using drugs/alcohol to cope.

I was reading on mental illness and signs of it and I think I nearly hit every check mark. A part of me feels embarrassed admitting it but another part of me feels it's the truth and I need to face it like a man. I do at times feel broken but now I finally have the courage to fix myself and face my problems instead of being a coward and running to drugs. 1 day at a time is my focus.

People were told to suck it up, so they tried. Today's society has gone so far to make depression and mental health issues normal that we're almost promoting them.

It's almost like what we've done with fat girls- we've told them it's ok to be fat so they've no incentive to change.

Admitting it to yourself is the hardest part. Good luck in the coming days and weeks, you got this. If you ever need to chat I'll be around. Take care, Sherbro.

I appreciate that a lot man, don't really have much support IRL so any help or advice I will gladly take. I guess one of the toughest parts to deal with is feeling like I'm on my own fighting against it but I know some of my sherbros on here are available and willing to help and that means a lot to me, truly.

Take care man, have a good night.

Too much scheming going on by the Elites(Religion/Govt) and people are finding out about it...........Back in the day people were too brainwashed that they didn't even think that they were getting taken advantage of by Religion thus they weren't affected by it.

1. Religion is complete bullshit and people know about it now but it's too late because they were already indoctrinated, all that time wasted......

2. Evil people get away with shit all the time, but you can't do shit(like Catholic Priest touching kids).............I mean evil people usually got away it, but now it's harder to ignore.

3.People getting ripped off thru low pay, etc.....Poor people dying/having a tough life....meanwhile society worships celebrities/Money.....it's fucking pathetic tbh

Yet the Media/Politicians/etc focus on dumb fucking shit to divide people instead of trying to actually change something.

I think all of this rustles jimmies {<jimmies}

Diet, climate and exercise on the physical front.

Social media . Bombardment of negative news. Too much information and suffering in the world for any empathetic people to ignore.

Even how we drink booze is vastly different than what it was a couple centuries ago. 40% booze was unheard of back in the day before the distilling process became advanced enough to make hard liquor.

+ environment lack of sunlight not to mention the side effects from countless chemical additives .. let alone medicines.

The internet and social media made it so we dont experience things organically anymore, we see everything all the time, so the world feels like a much smaller place in a way.

Not sure if you remember life pre-social media but the world felt a lot bigger back then.. like... there was more mystery around every corner. Nowadays... its like your just painting within the lines of a life that's already been lived before. You're just filling in the footsteps of a path that's already been traversed and laid out for you to follow. It just makes life feel like a chore in a way. Just my two cents.

Because modern life sucks. A lot of people can’t handle the dissonance caused by not being satisfied with the things society tells us to do (go to college, get an office job, get married, raise kids, etc.).

Office job by itself is enough to make me consider a shotgun to the dick.

My wife struggled with this one for years. She's a lot more caring & empathetic than I am and all the fucked up shit that goes on every day in our world was getting to her since she couldn't do a damn thing about it. Knowing that all this shit was happening and that she was also powerless to do a damn thing about it ate away at her.

Friend of ours had some great advice which helped her a lot. We need to adjust our circle of concern to better match our circle of influence, focus on the things we can do to make our little place in the world a bit better and don't get bent out of shape on the things we have no influence over. We all have the influence & ability to make tangible improvements in our immediate surroundings, and maybe even on a larger scale. We can't stop climate change but she did get a bunch of land designated as protected green space in various city planning meetings, thanks to her efforts it's now written into the 50 & 100 year plans for our city.

Props to her man. That's actually pretty cool especially knowing it'll be there when yas gone. That's very cool.

Yeah I know people who literally refuse to watch the news or talk about shit happening worldwide. I get it. I'm a sponge for information so I'm a little different. Things make me sad and looking for solutions. But I'm aware off how little I can actually achieve in the grand scheme of things and I'm fine with that, not with what's happening tho.

A lot of people aren't. Which is also understandable . Props to those who try despite feeling helpless. It's impressive to me.

I don't think it's actually much different to how it's always been, suicide rates are roughly the same, it seems to me that it's just more acceptable to talk about it now

Peeps have always suffered broham
Why do you think the image of gods son dying to absolve the world peoples of their sins and promosing to end their suffering through devotion to him and his father is such a powerful piece of propaganda?
Suffering is a string that runs through all human history. So i think it is a false view to say its more now than it was before.

As far as expressing it just in modern history women got the “weepies” soldiers got “combat fatigue” and people drank and smoked until their body rotted out.

Life been hard holmes

Because the world is fucking depressing and full of assholes. Next question?

Fuck yeah they were tougher. Just over a century ago, men were dying in their millions in WWI charging machine gun nests... now the pathetic little bitches of this generation cry that they have PSTD from people saying mean things to them online.

Fuck Millennials and Zoomers... what a complete and utter waste of space.

As an individual who suffers from clinical depression via being bipolar 2, I think the rate of people with actual mental illness & mood disorders are pretty much the same per capita. But people are more open about it & willing to go get diagnosed/seek treatment than in the past. Years ago, people would just suffer in silence or self-medicate with street drugs & alcohol. And they might just be labeled by their friends ( if they had any ) & family as "troubled" or "morose". And maybe they were chronically unemployed because they had a difficult time getting out of bed to their depression & were called "lazy".
Thankfully, it's less of a stigma now & those who suffer from clinical depression are seeking help for it much more frequently so it just seems like there are more cases than before.

Where there has been a genuine increase however is in general malaise & situational depression. And that's due to many different factors. Many of them already mentioned here by others previously. Some of those cases are serious enough where treatment via counseling is necessary but for many of these sorts of cases, a change in their behavior & environment is all that's needed.
