He's a top-10 all timer. But among the bottom 5. Not a top-5er, never was.
As all of the millennials grow up and out of the sport of mma, we will be replaced by the newer generations that may not have gone through the UFC late Middle Ages where GSP defended the WW title.
It was an impressive run, he took on the best WW’s in the world and didn’t duck any deserving number 1 contender.
That being said, our society is now much less patient than it used to be because technology allows us to instantaneously research a fighter’s wiki fight record and videos of him/her fighting.
That being said GSP might be the wiki champion of all time. An impressive record with maybe only Khabib threatening it with 0 losses rather than GSP’s 2. But with further analysis into the wiki of each goat fighter, many will see that GSP retired at 32 when many consider that their “prime”. Other goat fighters such as Anderson, Fedor and Aldo continued to fight well past their “prime” years and that is where they accrued most of their losses. By simple deduction, a person can see that if GSP continued to fight he would probably sufferer the same losses. Especially considering GSP’s last controversial fight with Hendricks which he immediately retired from the sport. The performance enhancing drugs of Anderson was when he suffered a catastrophic leg break well past his prime. Jones used peds when he was still young so it’s less excusable. So ped use once you are in your mid to late 30’s is more understandable if you wish to compete at the highest level rather than retire.
GSP never was caught for peds, though he only fought 1 fight under USADA. So that is a good thing for him even though a little extra research from an mma casual will reveal that GSP cherry picked his 1 USADA fight with an old veteran who was on his way out.
The biggest problem for GSP goat sayers is that he doesn’t have a good highlight reel. Going back to one of my original points, if you research GSP then you have his wiki and his videos. GSP while winning most rounds during his impressive title defense was never able to produce any significant footage of a fight being stopped. He nullified opponents and won rounds which is hard to encapsulate in a Short video for the new generations watching mma. It was “boring” and methodical rather than daring and ferocious. Nobody goes back and watches GSP out jab and wrestle control other fighters for the victory.
So while the wiki stat sheet looks good with all the W, the YouTube generation is not impressed by his performance.
How can you not see him as a top-5er ? He has one of the most impressive records against the top contenders of the strongest weight class in the world .... hmmHe's a top-10 all timer. But among the bottom 5. Not a top-5er, never was.
Beautifully saidActually more new fighters today have modeled there career's after GSP than any other GOAT contenders. Fighters like T.Woodly, Aldo, and Kevin Lee to name a few.
Nobody is training to be the next Anderson Silva because his skills and talent were unique, they relied heavily on a good chin, great reflexes, KO power and good speed, these are natural traits that any aspiring MMA'ist will be genetically handicapped from ever achieving.
Jon Jones is a tall fighter, with incredible reach, he uses his physical attributes incredibly well, and it makes him unique in that regard where a very small portion of the population are even capable of emulating him.
GSP is 5'10, between 180-190lbs, hes your every day guy, you dont need natural 1 punch KO power to be him, you dont need to have incredible reflexes, you don't need massive reach advantages, or be incredibly fast.
Thats what makes GSP the GOAT, is he's the guy who accomplished everything through work ethic alone, he's not the best grappler ( leo Santos submitted him in a 1:30 mins in a grappling match), not the best wrestler, not the best striker. He literally doesnt hold a single defining aspect that is superior to all his opponents. But he's mixes it up the best, his "boring" style is understood and copied by Aldo and TWoods because they can appreciate the intelligence behind it.
There is no fighter today who has had as great an impact on future aspiring practioners than GSP, who is the blue print for success in this sport.
Keyboard warriors will continue to disparage him, but its the kids in the gym that will watch GSP, and understand why he's the best, and will forever remain the GOAT because of it.

You don’t have to call me shit.Beautifully said
You saved this shit thread.
OP is still shit though
Maybe, but being the only 3 division champion would be far better for his legacy then having T.Woodly on his resume.
But GSP did allude to being open to facing Tyrone if Tyrone continues to win.
Which GSP is smart, because Tyrone with 1 draw, 1 split decision and 1 extremely boring decisionis a lot harder to sell than T.Woodly with 6 title defenses, and catching up to GSP's record.
