Why Do Some Big MMA Fighters Have No Chests?

Timmah defended it more times than Brock, and he's got tits.

Only if you count his defense against Gan McGee, which I think was turned into a DQ.

Developing strength is perfectly bilateral and linear A to B fashion will make you safely stronger at less than perfect situations as well.

Fighters are better off avoiding barbell bench in favor of db bench plus other functional movements like staggered hand position push-ups, and using unstable positions such as push-ups in a TRX or rings and "bench press" sled drags

But personally, I train my fighters with a lot more posterior chain training, as well as explosive lifts, plyo work...moderate weights but high reps. Plus lots of kb swings and snatches, hypertrophy is almost never a goal for my athletes

DB bench has limitations that barbell bench doesn't.

Barbell bench press is more "functional" then all of those. And the usage of the word "functional" indicates broscience hack.

Then why are you doing moderate weights with high reps? Fail at basic training science.

Sigh. You are trying to increase your fighters strength. Not some esoteric movement patterns... Work on strength in the gym (and power). Things like barbell circuits and kettle bell swings are conditoning exercises.

"moderate weight with high reps". Thats not increasing their strength... Bench press is the most "trainable" (easiest to progress) horizontal push. The whole "unilateral unstable surface etc" is currently viewed as inferior to tradional barbell strength training.

Rampage is also puzzled by this issue...

Yeah you definitely need the big pecs to be successful in MMA.

u dont need those big heavy chest requires alot of oxygen

Yeah cos chests are so heavy... If you really think chest mass would cause someone to gas faster you have no clue.

FYI the maximum amount of muscle natural bodybuilders have added to their frame is max about 30 pounds. That's all the muscle spread out over the body. The actual muscles of the chest would not weigh much at all...

I think cygnus is trying to justify himself doing to many bench press. If it IS so important you should go run and tell all these professional fighters how they're fuckin up.

Prime fedor had pecs. His chest and overall body was more developed and muscular...not ripped but a muscular bro

plenty of mma fighters have big pecs but not huge, Huge pecs would seriously limit rom in striking and grappling

Shogun does have a chest and is a very strong guy.

Werdum is not a strong guy for a HW, but he fights smart and has elite BJJ.

Carlos Condit has no pecs at all. He actually looks like the kind of guy who would get his ass beat in a bar fight, but of course, it would be a serious mistake to start a fight with him.

abs won't help the brazilians....

they already gas out to fast

The structure of your skeletal system has a lot to do with how big your chest can get from working out. I found that my chest looked better when I did more back exercises and less chest exercises but no matter what I do my chest is small. People used to ask me about my triceps...but never anything else...your natural build has a lot to do with how you look.
