Why do fighters have such horrible tattoos?

Trashy people usually have poorly done trashy tattoos and there are definitely a lot of trashy MMA fighters. Look at Poirier for example in his younger days. You can tell a lot of these were likely done in the kitchen of a mobile home:

It's contagious.

When Aspinall fought Volkov a few months ago, he was so smitten with the monstrosity Volkov got to cover up another back tattoo that he went out and got one like it to cover up his original back tattoo.

I never judge a person’s tattoos because I’ve been told I have some bad ones as well…

That being said, people usually get tattoos for themselves, and not to impress other people. If they’re happy with them, then that’s all that should really matter.

I don't believe that is usually the case, sure it is sometimes. But all the tribals on the Jersey Shore are people trying to look cool

Maybe. But I feel the majority of people who get tattoos don’t give a fuck about what others think of them.

Then again, when I first started getting tattoos, it wasn’t as accepted as it is today. I could potentially not get hired because of them, and I had relatives from the Philippines come visit and thought I had been to prison because of them. With that in mind, I feel you had to be pretty committed to put something permanent on your body.

But yes, things are definitely different nowadays, and getting tattoos is the “cool thing to do.” Still, I’ve always felt that it takes a “fuck what everyone else thinks” type mindset to get one, just because it was taboo until recently.

This is a good, thoughtful exchange. I think they are lot like nose rings. Once you start seeing 50 year moms getting them, they start to loose their edge. Face (and some neck) tattoos may still be the exception.

What is the point of the blackout tattoo Aspinall has? Who would want a tattoo of just solid black ink?

These are people who get hit in the head for a living, do you think they’re going to make the best choices?

"Why do people that get kicked and punched in the head for a living make poor decisions with their bodies?"

Huh?

Some people get tatoos that seem like a good idea at the time but it doesn't turn out good or the artist themselves also weren't good.

Some people actually like getting shitty tatoos on purpose

If you want a really good tatoo for God's sake go to a real professional and pay up.
