I never said Punk would be exciting. But really the UFC gets only good things from this fight.
a) CM Punk wins, people watched, and the UFC were justified in signing him. He's probably only fighting once anyway.
b) CM Punk loses, his opponent suddenly has a following and it shows the world that MMA is not Pro-Wrestling.

Signing the Green Ranger isn't going to draw in the viewers to make it worth it; and if he wins he's 42. If he loses, well down, you beat someone who was popular in the 90s, whose name doesn't sell tickets.

Also, they didn't sign him because they didn't want to. That's the answer.

The UFC seems to take a "we don't do freak fights" stand every now and then (even though they do freak fights), and usually it's a few specific guys that bear the brunt of this, in order for the UFC to project its legitimacy.

They'll sign CM Punk and Toney, but then they need to demonstrate that freak fights aren't really their thing. But instead of a clear policy, it's more like "this freak is okay but this freak isn't."

Because the last time a high level TMA background made you a hot UFC prospect all by itself was 1996, and at that time Jason Frank was still busy entertaining six-year olds by wearing a morphsuit and making exaggerated gestures so that people would know when his character was talking.
