Why didnt Anderson face the reigning LHW champ when he was the MW champ?

Because GSP didn't express any interest in wanting to move up. Silva did. He already fought some LHW:s and he said he wanted to go for the belt but;

Why did Anderson not want to face legit competition at light heavyweight? Was he scared he would get absolutely starched? If any of you are gonna say 'wahh wahh Forrest just lost the championship in his last fight!' just dont. Forrest is not a good fighter. He pulled 2 miracles out of his ass during his career, one the first shogun fight, two the rampage fight. When Forrest wasnt pulling miracles out of his ass he was running from the cage crying that he lost.

So what gives? Why did Anderson never challenge real competition at light heavyweight?

First because Machida was his friend and they didn't wanna fight each other.

Then because he nearly lost to Chael while Jones was coming up at LHW, who was clearly best fighter in the world. And he'd recently infuriated Dana with the Maia spectacle in Abu Dhabi.

Then because Jones actually won the belt. People DID call for the Jones/Silva superfight, but those people cared more about the game of rankings and records than they did the sport of fighting.

Edit: if you're talking pre-Machida: He wasn't a draw, so the UFC weren't about to give him a title shot in their headlining star-studded division. It was the Chuck/Tito/Rampage/Forrest/Shogun/Rashad division. They especially weren't gonna give him a title shot coming off performances like the ones vs Cote, Leites, Maia.

He was busy calling out easier competition, the smaller 170 pounders
 
He moved up and fought former champs while GSP stayed in his lane.

The 205 division was full of sharks during Andersons reign at 185. Back in the day divisions were loaded and guys were lined up to fight the number 1 guy so there was no time for a champ vs champ super fight.

Now a days guys want to pick and choose who they fight instead of the next guy in line.

This is the superfight era. Most guys want the big fight instead of cleaning out their divisions like the Silva/GSP era.
