Ken was no slouch, he went to the Olympic trials for wrestling.

Ken was old and had blown out ACLs and had a bad weight cut against Tito. Tito wouldn't have accepted a heavyweight fight with Ken, and in his prime it would have been total domination from Ken.

Ken wasn't a total noob in terms of amateur wrestling. Both guys showed up for the fight in wrestling shoes. Ken was very athletic and he wrestled in high school. Part of Ken's legend was that he made it to high school state championship but he broke his neck. There was this other story about how he tried out for the Olympic trials but I believe it was open to public. Lastly Ken was also a bigger submission threat than Severn at that point of their career.

Ken Shamrock is essentially what true shoot catch/pro wrestlers were like in the day. Guys like Frank Gotch, George Hackenschmidt, Ed Stranger Lewis, Ad Santell, Lou Thesz etc. Guys who mastered submission style wrestling but weren't big names or found much success in the "amateur" fields of Greco Roman and freestyle. I actually thought Severn would have done better against Coleman than he did. I guess in hindsight he had very dominant wrestling against strikers but not so much against other wrestlers.

Yet in bjj new wrestlers get guillotined right and left when they start bjj if they leave their head outside during double legs against somebody decent. Thats why alot of school teach to double leg with head inside, with ear against opponents chest or forehead first for power double on solar plexus, but usually not head outside UNLESS the guy really really postures up like a really good deadlift as he drives forward. Its too risky against a guy whos got slick guillotines though. Source? Im a bjj black belt.
