Why complain that work = modern day slavery?

It's a cog in the wheel, lack of freedom thing. Insignificance. I'd say gets easier the smaller the community. Even in big cities there are small businesses, from that point of view.

It's almost like they're living in a completely different economy. Because they come from a collectivist culture and don't mind cramming 12 people in a 2 bedroom apartment.

They're better at managing resources and combining effort. That doesn't mean the situation isn't fucked up.
we just call that 'bean packed' around these parts.

They shoukd start thier own business and start exploiting people, if they don't like it.
Slave mentality:
A slave doesn't want to be free, he wants to have his own slaves.

Work basically is slavery. I'm so fucking glad I got out of the working class. That's not to say that you can't have a good job or enjoy life when working a job, it's just nowhere near as good as having financial freedom. The flexibility and time is just so valuable.

Right? This is why hiring Mexicans, especially the undocumented ones are preferable since they rarely bitch or moan and have strong work ethic.
This is a problem. One that usually gets swept under the umbrella of racism when it isn't. There's a long history of Corporations relying on foreign labor as scabs to undermine the rights of labor and undocumented Mexican labor is it's current iteration.

There seems to be an underlying assumption here that everyone is middle class or has middle class options. It's the people making 9 bucks an hour that usually equate work with slavery.
The people who I've heard this statement from are middle class folks. Which is why I mentioned it.

The types who argue that we're not free becuase we all follow the same plan: "go to school, get a job, work, get married, have kids, die, repeat I am free"

Work in theory is an exchange of your time and effort in exchange for money.

I'd say that work alone isn't slavery, but the cycle of working in order to not starve on the street, or have the little that you've earned in life taken away, is.

Honestly, I just wrote a two-page diary entry on google docs, and most of what I put in there was about working for a living, as well as the use of the word "allowed", and the situation in Hong Kong and the inability for most people to travel freely.

Slavery is too strong of a word, but especially in 2020, I've found the idea of many people being "free" to be a bit absurd.

it sounds like you don't have many interactions with the low level wage slavery class outside of them holding their tongue while they serve you.

I work construction and I hear this often, mostly from a certain age group. I usually explain to them that they they get paid to work, "nobody is making you come here. If you're unhappy you should probably find something that does before its too late."
It's not slavery.

not all slavery involves a physical collar and being forced out into the field at the crack of dawn on the end of a whip.....to only see it like that is very narrow minded.....

if you pay 30% income tax, that roughly equates to working 3-4 months out of the year for free, who works for free doing what they dont want to be doing except a slave?

we are "free" so long as we live in the box of 10 million+ statutes and bylaws they pen us in with

we live in democracies which only equal freedom for the majority, this will become readily apparent the day mandatory vaccinations come into effect

if you have a pet, you are a slave owner

education, healthcare, suppression of technologies, governance, religon, media and other weapons of mass distraction are modern collars and yokes....

that our countries do not print our own monies and outsource it to the private banks of the world, is also another form of slavery for it creates a debt that can never be repaid

the list goes on and on .......people are easily pacified and placated by a few flashy shiny things, throw a set of tits into the equation and this slavery thing doesnt seem so bad ((to the majority))

It's not slavery.

In my case, I'm not that happy with my current situation (though it's not terrible by any means), yet the alternatives are either unobtainable or homelessness.

It's not slavery in the slightest, but if you are treading waist-deep through a swamp of treacle and see nothing but a grey mist, it's either that or drown.

@Mike and @Jack Stevonovich with great talking points, and I am happy to see people here agreeing with them.

I am middle class. I have a blue collar job, and I could have gotten better work by going to college * not flunking out * and generally not making bad decisions and chasing skirts.

However

A lot of opportunity existed for me. The same amount of opportunity and education does not exist for others, and they suffer much worse daily struggles than I do.

This country doesn't hold us under slavery. That is a gross exaggeration. But we are taken advantage of, and things could be MUCH better for the lower income in america.

Lol @ millionaire NFL players bitching and moaning that they're treated like slaves.

I feel you bro, but people can be their own worst enemies. Not everyone is born with the same opportunities, but at some point you got to look yourself in the mirror for where you are or aren't. Slavery in this modern world is more mentality than a real occurence. *Places were legit slavery is occuring excluded.*

Waves of industrialization has hammered most people into meaningless jobs. One look into history shows that while industrialization has suceeded wildly, people did not take kindly to it and fought it the entire way.

yeah not all of us have the same opportunities in life and because of poor education we are left on our own to figure out that the whole spiritual ball of wax comes from what we ourselves "buy" into and what we give in exchange for what we bought..
