So why aren't there more male gold-diggers out there in the real world as well? It's not like guys don't like money, and it would be easy for them to find out if his potential gf/wife is wealthy, yet it's rare that you hear about guys doing it.

Most people are normal. Normal right now is still the man being self reliant. It's still acceptable for a woman to not be self reliant. So being a gold digger is normal. For a man it is not. You'd have to be able to go against cultural norms to be a male gold digger.

In time I think the amount of gold diggers could become more even as beliefs in equality become more normal.

Very few (if any) popular attractive features are unhealthy. On the other hand, women are looking for men that can provide the necessary resources that can help raise the offspring. So men that can provide material comforts and security are attractive to them. Gold diggers are just like shallow men, a more exaggerated version of regular folks. We've evolved for millions of years this way, even though this no longer applies in modern society, it's still a very short time to shake off old habit. It explains the impulse for men to shower gifts to women they are attracted to, and for women to be obsessed with their own appearance.
