Why aren't Superman punches used as much these days?

Also James Irvin Knocked out Houston Alexander with a pretty brutal Superman Punch

its effective when you land, and it's the type of punch that takes timing and technique....it's not supposed to ko/tko, it's more of a tactical movement with a strike to throw your opponent off....only few can execute it properly like gsp can.

as you can tell gsp connected and still managed to get out of the way and not get hit by fitch.
Condit.

If that Dagestani Boxing champ goes to tristar montreal I'm willing to wager you see them again in a few years.

GSP needs another protege is all.

It seems inefficient to me. A lot of explosive motion and energy for a relatively low percentage strike with a high risk of leaving you off balance and out of position.

Just looking at it from a fundamentals perspective, ideally you want to always be balanced, hands up to defend, not over extended and the Superman punch basically violates all these principles.

Are there exceptions? Yup.
Can a striker find a situation where it makes sense? absolutely.

but it doesn’t surprise me that it is not a frequent tool. Personally I would prefer to see fighters make their foundation and fundamentals better. I’d rather see crisp jabs, tight hooks, good footwork, head movement, staying off center line, varied angles of entry and exit...

that's carlos condit, not jon fitch. GSP is not throwing a superman punch here. GSP is countering a failed attempt at a superman punch from carlos condit.

I use it in sparring once in a while. Just for fun. Can work if the opponent thinks a low kick is coming. But it high risk low reward if not light sparring

Fighters aren’t setting them correctly anymore

superman punch = spinning shit

Yeah, was going to say Val uses them more than most...

lol? you have no idea what a superman punch is, i guess?

the GIF shows carlos conduit hesitating to throw a superman punch and he gets countered by GSP with a right hand, not a superman punch.
therefore, the technique in this case is not effective and highly inefficient because of how telegraphed it was. conduit ends up being off balanced and out of position and eats a perfectly timed counter.

thanks for coming to my ted talk, YA AMATEUR

Condit hesitated a knee strike" NOT a superman punch

you should tell WHITE ANDERSON about that

he thinks Condit the one using the superman punch

Sherdog posters telling professional MMA fighters that a technique they use is useless.

Fascinating.....

On to the topic, Valentina is a big proponent of them. She used it multiple times against Nunes as well.

are you fn dumb man...do you even know who the fighters are in the ufc, go learn that shit or stay off the forums bud.

the clip is of gsp vs fitch....and it clearly shows gsp connecting with his superman punch then avoiding fitch counter and not getting hit.

superman punch isn't supposed to be a finishing strike to ko/tko not to say that it couldn't happen....that's not condit and you are a complete failure to come on here and not know who the fighters are.

what's more disgusting is that he's a red belt and doesn't even know who the fighters are....pathetic. At least if you are unsure research it before you post so you don't look like a dumb ass.

God I hope you are a troll or I feel really bad for you.

So you're saying a gif in which Carlos Condit jumps without throwing a punch is somehow evidence that superman punches don't work? I don't even think he was trying to throw a superman punch.

This

There's a reason why no good boxer uses it
Because there are no knees and kicks in boxing, so they would be useless? The punch is a fake kick/knee to punch. It's amazing how many people think it's just a jumping punch

It's kind of a meme punch. Kind of high risk low reward for something thats just a punch because you're leaving yourself very vulnerable to being countered without having your stance under you. It isnt useless and can surprise people but its not something that should be in every fighters toolkit.

GSP did become very effective with it using it off of/with his jab and as a way to shift into low kicks from his karate stance and play off his double leg threat. But just because someone becomes good at a technique doesnt really make it optimal. GSP was so great he could afford to take some risks in order to be more dynamic.

I think it being a lower striking skill era + GSP being very explosive fighter with a long reach and good fight IQ made it work.
