I think the problem is Dorne ended up neither one thing or the other, it didn't really get enough focus in season 5 to turn it into much of substance but enough that a lack of substance was annoying. A shame as generally I think season 5 was excellent, the Stannis/Wall plots, the Sparrows, the sons of the Harpy, etc.

Ugh, season 5 was awful. They ruined Stannis and somehow made the Sand Snakes even more annoying than they are in the books.

Alexander Siddig, the guy who played Doran, said that originally his role was supposed to be much bigger then they changed it. This is pretty obvious though since he's to big an actor for the few scenes they gave him. It's pretty much fan fiction to me now. Still watch it tho. I'll never watch anything ever again from those 2 writers tho

They basically gave his role to the Queen of Thorns. In the books, he's plotting to help Dany take the throne after Oberyn got killed.
