Who would win in a Jon vs Alex fight?

Who wins?

Honestly if Alex beats Ankalaev, I think he could get past Jones. Jones is slower and coming off a bad injury, not to mention his fight mileage. He would have the stylistic advantage too, but I think it would be a closer fight than people think.

Jon Jones is the LHW GOAT and arguably the MMA GOAT but that discussion os another bag of potatoes. He in his prime was the best wrestler, one of the best grapplers, and one of the best strikers the division had ever seen. He was a freakish physical specimen.

Poatan might be a better kickboxer than Jones but this is MMA and Jones would take him down, keep him down, and submit him. This would happen without a doubt. Jones always fought tactically and doing what it took to win. He played to his strengths. Alex is my current favorite fighter and I despise Jones but Alex would be asleep by the 3rd minute

Jones unless Alex's grappling has improved significantly. If he can so much as neutralize Jones on the ground then it gets interesting real quick. I also wonder if Chuck has taught him the art of popping up after being taken down.

Jones is very dangerous on top though. I think it also depends on where Jones is at physically with his age and wear and tear (even though they're the same age), he's been at the top for a long time.

The Jones that lost to Reyes five years ago would have been a risky pick against Pereira.

The Jones that tore his pec doing a push up this year would have to pray that he can take Alex down

I will never pick against Jones, until I actually see him get beat. We all know that this fight will not go 5 rounds, and nobody has come close to finishing Jon yet, so do the math. You never know though, so it would be a great fight to watch! Probably will never happen though.
The whole world watched him lose to Reyes

People overlook the REALLY PAINFULLY PROMINENT technical deficiencies in Jon's striking, specifically his striking defense, because he largely got away with it due to his usually enormous length advantage.

As longer leaner athletes grew into the division he struggled. And he struggled with guys that were kindergarten level strikers relative to Poatans level of mastery.

Jon is in extreme danger all times it is on the feet.

And to be fair, Jon's top game on the ground is PHENOMENAL.

So Alex would be in extreme danger if he gets taken down.

So... does old ghost of Jon Jones take Alex down and keep him there without getting hurt on the way?

Even though they are similar age, Jon is a senior citizen in MMA years and Alex still looks to be improving.

Just wondering what people are thinking about this match up, right now.

Had to re-do the thread, since I didn't click the option for votes to be displayed publicly.
If Alex can stop the takedown or get back up when taken down, he has a real good chance at the upset. Especially if he can land those crazy calf kicks on Jon’s feminine legs.
I’d enjoy seeing the matchup and would like to see if Jones tries to stand with Alex for his ego’s sake.

Jones, rewatch the Gane fight if you think otherwise. There is a reason why Alex never went up to HW in Kickboxing and MMA

Jones has faced more strikers than Poatan has faced wrestlers so I think Jones would know how to adapt to Poatan more than Poatan would know how to adapt to him.

Would be a more intriguing fight to watch than him vs. Stipe tho

I look at Jon Jones tendencies and habits and feel like this is more than an "adjustment" and really along the lines of scrap the whole thing down to the foundation and re-write the code from scratch.

Which is quite the trick to pull of for an old dog.

Jon LOVES his stiff arm frame. That stands out to me as his "bread and butter" defense and I can see Alex punishing that BADLY.

(I will give credit that Jon is fairly disciplined about keeping his rear hand up on his face during exchanges.
That is something and not insignificant.)

Jon's primary tool for controlling distance is his leg kicks, specifically his oblique kick, his lead leg low sidekick.
Those are very slow weapons compared to Alex's low kicks.

Do you see Jon winning the low kick battle?

Do you see Jon out jabbing Alex?

How does Jon control range?

____

I'm thinking in terms of specifically what tools each man brings, and I don't see Jon doing well on the feet AT ALL.

I know everyone's (rightfully) high on Alex atm, but fights against Jiri and Hill at LHW offer no insight as to how a fight with Jon at HW would go.

We know Jon can hold and take down world class strikers and win there, we don't know if Alex can avoid all that. For this reason I voted Jon.

Now if Alex is able to avoid Jons wrestle, then I give him the nod, but that part is unproven still.
