Who was better, Randy or Dan?

Randy did more with less but Hendo had the more memorable wars.

Randy. "Decision Dan" as he used to be known has too many asterisks on his resume with bad decisions. He straight-up lost to Nogueira and he shouldn't have gotten the decision against Goes to even put him in a position to win the UFC 17 tournament, plus he could've/should've lost to Ninja, Kondo, Bustamante, and Franklin. Randy's only close victories were against Rizzo the first time, and I think he very clearly won on points anyway (and then definitively pounded Rizzo out in the rematch to prove that the first fight was only close because he punched himself out and gassed), and Brandon Vera after he'd already won and defended all of his titles and cemented his legacy, and even that fight he won by UD. Randy and it's not close IMO.
Dan really did have many dubious decision wins. That's a knock for sure. He does also have more wins over legends and vs guys that outsized him by more.

I still cant decide. Dan has the better resume. Randy wins head to head IMO.

In terms of straight skill Randy has better fight IQ but Dan has a better chin and more ways to finish l. True toss up

First of all, wtf happened to Sherdog's layout and theme? Last time it was this bad was when the switched to a new platform and users had to make their own custom theme to not burn your retinas.

Back to the topic, I'd give the slight edge to Randy. I'm a big fan of both, but I am slightly biased towards Couture.

His first win over Chuck was incredibly impressive. He rocked prime Chuck Liddell on the feet, took him down and finished him. Beat Tito Ortiz by completely dominating him in wrestling, beat Vitor twice, Gonzaga, and I also feel like Jeremy Horn is a notable win for him as well.

The layout is horrible on mobile now. Almost unusable

Full respect for both, always wondered if Randy ever had more than one fight in a night during the tournament days.

Yes, Randy won the UFC 13 HW tournament, beating Tony Halme and Steven Graham in one night. He also competed in the Rings "King of Kings" tournament in 2000 (though the tournament technically ran into 2001). In the first event, he beat Jeremy Horn and Ryushi Yanagisawa in one night, then in the second event he beat TK in his first fight of the night but got subbed by Valentijn Overeem in his second fight. Randy was no stranger to tournament competition.

FWIW, Dan and Shogun's fight is one that firmly belongs in an eternal MMA Time Capsule.

Yep, an epic war and one of my favorite live PPV viewing experiences.
