Jose Aldo lost to Max 2x, Conor and Vok at the height of his career and prime
I voted Volk in the poll, but saying Aldo was in his prime during these fights is wrong.

If you honestly believe Aldo's speed, explosiveness and overall athleticism in these fights were anywhere near his peak you probably have not watched all of his fights. He even lost the ability to throw his elite low kicks as frequently and effectively because of injury, one of his best tools.

Here we go again with the nostalgia biased Aldo fanboys. The only fighter so blindly revered people will just step over certain results like it’s irrelevant

- Lost to McGregor at 29 (could argue it’s a fluke)
- Lost to Holloway twice (by finish) at 30
- Lost to Volkanovski at 32

It’s always the Aldo fanboys moving the goalposts like “b-b-but he wasn’t in his prime!!!1” when talking about this. As soon as a Sherdog darling starts losing this excuse will be thrown up, which is ridiculous. A fighter can lose in his prime too.

Only in MMA people will somehow put a fighter over 3 other division GOAT contenders while said fighter is 0-4 against these other three.Make it make sense.

B-b-but title defenses!!1! Yes, they count. Yes, Aldo has the most. But they were also against much weaker competition than Volkanovski’s. Blindly looking at title defense volume is just silly, especially in this case.

Aldo is a beast, a joy to watch, an absolute legend and a rightful future Hall of Famer, but he just isn’t the FW GOAT. That title is reserved for Alexander Volkanovski.

Bisping was a paper champ because he blantantly ducked the rightfull contenders Yoel and Rob.
That's not what a paper champ means tho. Paper champ means. Paper champ refers to someone who didn't who holds the belt that is supposed to mean he is the best in the world, but he didn't beat the guy who actually is. Like DC when he became lhw champ. Volk now because he didn't beat Ilia. Bisping was just a duck

People are starting to count out Aldo because new fans have no idea how good Mike Brown, Chad Mendes and most of Aldo best wins where back in the day. Pure recency bias.

Aldo became champion at just 23yo, has 4 title defenses more than Volk and is also a 2 time champion.

That age think is the dumbest argument ever. Aldo became champion at like 23yo. By 28 he had 9 title defenses, Volkanovsk at 28yo was fighting in a event called fkn “wolongang wars” lmao. Everyone has it’s own time.

0-4

The WEC Featherweight title is the SAME TITLE as the UFC Featherweight Title. I count Urijah Faber as any other former Champion, you can’t take the WEC away from history, it was the MMA Leader in the lighter divisions at the time and Aldo’s WEC Title was brought over to the UFC with him.
Aldo is still the GOAT

Kind of a casual take whenever fans bring up age like this tbh. Unless you're trolling.

He had around 30 pro fights already when he fought Conor, and spars super hard. Everybody ages differently, but it seems all of the GOATs decline around 30 fights in. Aldo clearly wasn't as fast and explosive as he was in the past by this point, and was unable to use his low kicks as frequently and effectively.

Anyways it seems like Aldo is a bit older than he's listed as.

quote from Gilbert Burns:
I remember when I was a blue belt, I was younger than him, now I'm older than him. I don't know what happened, but I'm older.

quote from reddit:
In Brazil where Aldo grew up, parents rarely got their children’s birth documents sorted right away. As a matter of fact, out of the entire country of Brazil in the 90’s, 44% of births were not registered. A logical conclusion you can draw is that this number was even higher in the 80’s when Aldo was born, and it’s higher again, considering he comes from an impoverished area, being the favelas.

When Aldo did get his birth documents sorted, and before he came to fight in the US, he had to tell the government office how old he was, and it’s more than likely he told a small lie. He wanted to get into the best fight organizations in the world after all, so why not say he’s a couple years younger than he really is?

Many fighters lie about their age, including fighters with relations to the UFC. Meng Ding, who fought on this seasons contender series is an example of this.

Well, I watched Aldo back in WEC, well before his UFC fights. So I am quite familiar with Jose, who is and was one of my favorite fighters.

But yes, vs Max both times he was at his very best and prime. He just lost cause Max was better plain and simple. And this is when Aldo was champ coming of a great win over Edgar. He looked good vs Max as well winning early rounds, Max just beat him. Aldo after that TKO'd Stephens and Moicano, he had a decision loss to VOlk and then went to BW and was still challenging for titles in 2020. So yes, in 2016/2017 he was in his prime and best.

Aldo put the FW division on the map in MMA. Volk is undeniably a legend at 145, but Jose Aldo is a legend, pioneer, & laid the groundwork for where the division is at today. Aldo is the daddy of FW's.

Aldo still has more ranked wins, title fight wins, and title defenses than Volk. Volk is damn close to cracking my top 10 all time though.

With Volkanovski regaining his FW title, adding another title win to his legacy and becoming a 2x champ, do you consider him the FW GOAT? Was he already the GOAT? Or does he still need to do a little more?

Personally I still think Aldo is just a small step above due to the quantity and diversity of ranked opponents he defeated at FW, though I believe a win over Evloev would edge Volk over him. What do you all think?
