I agree and disagree. I think Alex utilizes grappling in a way that will help him against elite competition; he uses it defensively (TD defense, guard) in an effective way in that context.Gane for sure. Yes Ngannou held him down and Jon Jones submitted him, but Ngannou is enormous and Jon Jones is arguably the greatest MMA practitioner in the history of the sport. It might not have been against top tier competition, but Gane hit a heel hook in the Octagon. How many other heavyweights in UFC history have landed heel hooks?
Answer: Four, and it's not likely many on here now would be able to name another big man that pulled one off.
Gane on the other hand has never shown he has ANYTHING in the grappling department against elite competition. I will give that Jones is a better wrestler than anyone Alex has faced, but no way on the one-legged Francis fight; I saw with my own eyes that he laid there helpless on the ground for the longest time- against an injured guy that was not the greatest grappler (in a way no one good on the ground would do). The fact that he hit a unique submission against a lesser fighter doesn't really mean much in the bigger picture IMO, because he isn't going to get anyone good with that. Those low-mid level HWs are a joke.
As far as who wins in a wrestling match between the two, I don't know, and it doesn't really matter. Alex uses his grappling to promote his striking game in a more effective way in MMA than Gane, at least at the elite level. I also don't see Alex shitting the bed against a grappler like Gane did against Jones. Even if Alex did lose, he wouldn't look that pathetic.
